MAMARONECK, N.Y. (AP) - Phil
Mickelson's bid for a third consecutive
major ended with a shocking collapse
Sunday when he bungled his way to a
double bogey on the final hole, giving the
U.S. Open to Geoff Ogitvy.
The winning shot in this test of sur
vival at Winged Foot was Ogilvy's (Moot
par putt that he figured was only good for
second place.
The memory will be Mickelson on the
72nd hole, one minute on the verge of
joining Tiger Woods as the only players
over the last 50 years with three straight
majors, the next minute looking like the
Mickelson of old with a reckless attempt
to get out of trouble.
Ogitvy closed with a 2-over 72 in the
highest-scoring U.S. Open since 1974
at Winged Foot. He became the first
Australian to win the U.S. Open since
David Graham in 1981.

HALLE, Germany (AP) - Roger
Federer won his fourth consecutive
title at the Gerry Weber Open and tied
Bjorn Borg's record of 41 straight grass
court wins with a 6-0, 6-7 (4), 6-2 vic
tory Sunday over fifth-seeded Tomas
Berdych.
Federer tied Borg’s record, set
between 1976 and 1981, while playing
in his ninth final in nine tournaments in
2006. He became the Halle tournament’s
only four-time winner.
LONDON (AP) - Ueyton Hewitt
defeated American James Blake 6-4.6-4
Sunday to win the grass-court champion
ship at the Queen’s Club tournament.
The eighth-seeded Australian, who
won three straight titles at the Wimbledon
warmup from 2000-2002, joined John
McEnroe and Boris Becker as four-time
winners.
NEW YORK (AP) - Former major
leaguer David Segui said he used HGH
and was among the players mentioned
by ex-teammate Jason Grimsley to
federal investigators. Segui added that
he used the drug with a doctor's pre
scription because of a growth hormone
defidency.
Segui, who spent 15 years in the
majors and retired in 2004, said on
ESPN’s “Outside the Lines" on Sunday
that he continues to use HGH legally. He
said he first started using the hormone
after the deficiency was found when he
went for blood work before surgery dur
ing his playing career. The 39-year-old
first baseman said Grimsley came to
him this past offseason, seeking advice
about HGH and how it might help him
recover from major arm surgery.

Special to the HHJ
HAWKINSVILLE
- Anglers’ high hopes for
more fishing opportuni

as Senator Ross Tolleson
and Georgia Department
of Natural Resources
Commissioner Noel
Holcomb welcomed almost
2,000 visitors to the grand
opening of the Ocmulgee
Public Fishing Area in
Bleckley and Pulaski coun
ties.
The DNR Wildlife
Resources Division will
manage the PFA that is
located on the state
owned Ocmulgee Wildlife
Management Area.
Amenities found here
include a main 106-acre
lake, a separate three-acre
kids fishing lake, a boat
ramp, two fishing piers,
fish cleaning station, an
office, storage buildings, a
pavilion/activity center and
parking areas.
“Fishing is big business
in Georgia,” said Senator
Ross Tolleson. “Based on
12,000 annual fishing trips
expected at Ocmulgee PFA,
the lake will generate about
$430,000 annually in fish
ing related expenditures,
resulting in $862,100 in
economic activity each year.
When other outdoor recre
ation such as bird and wild
life watching is considered,
these numbers double.”
The grand opening of the
PFA began with anglers
arriving at daybreak to put
their boats in the main lake
and test their luck on such
species as largemouth bass,
crappie, bluegill, redear
sunfish and channel cat
fish.

Some teams put limita
tions in their players’ con
tracts to limit how stupid
they can be.
I rode motorcycles for 20
years, and I know one thing
to be true - every rider has
an accident.
The military requires its
service members to wear
protective gear while rid
ing. Their philosophy is
that since the military
spends money training,
pays the service member’s
salary, it has a say in what
he or she does.
I think the same applies
to athletes who are paid
big bucks by their teams.
The Steelers have a right
to expect their quarterback
to be available to play. If he
gets hurt, it should be while
he’s playing for them.
Jason Grimsley is anoth
er checkmark in the stupid
column.
Grimsley made $2 mil
lion last season with the
Orioles, but lost his job with
the Arizona Diamondbacks
when the Feds busted him
after they tracked a ship
ment of steroids to his
house. Neither rain, sleet
nor snow keep the post
office from delivering ille
gal substances.
I hope he saved a pile of
that money for his defense
lawyers.

649,000 other citizens,
many of whom participate
in some type of wildlife
related recreation,” said
Holcomb. “This is the
ninth PFA available in
Georgia and, of course, will
be of wonderful economic
value, but most of all it will
provide an opportunity for
families to get together in a
safe, outdoors environment
and develop an apprecia
tion of our fantastic natu
ral resources in this part of
the state.”
The main lake has numer
ous coves and points, creek
channels, standing timber
and submerged humps for
attracting fish. The deepest
point at the dam is about
30 feet.
The lake will be inten
sively managed to provide
the best possible fishing
opportunities for both bank
and boat anglers.
The area will be open
from sunrise to sunset all
year long. Anglers 16 years
of age or older must pos
sess a current Georgia fish
ing license and a Wildlife
Management Area stamp
in order to fish. Anglers in
possession of a one-day fish
ing license, sportsman’s,
lifetime, Senior (65+) or
Honorary license do not
have to possess a WMA
stamp. Anglers may use
up to two fishing poles and
any size outboard motor
may be used at idle speed.

He’ll do more time in

Another interesting
aspect of Grimsley’s legal
problems that should send
shudders through every
pro athlete.
Their unions can’t save
them from Federal pros
ecution. Grimsley has
more to worry about than
a 50-game suspension. He’s
looking at jail time. There’s
no union negotiation for
that, which makes Barry
Bond’s case more interest
ing. Can he get into the
Hall of Fame while playing
in the penal league?
Another athlete who
through his own negligence
hurt his financial future
is Duke’s J.J. Reddick. He
gets likkered up and sub
sequently arrested just to
hurt his NBA draft status.
The rumors are true.
Students don’t learn any
thing in college. He must
have failed his econom
ics class or he would have
learned that the consumer
sets the value, and teams
smarting from public rela
tions fiascos aren’t going to
pay big bucks for someone
who might have a problem.
Image is everything in
the world of sports and in
the NBA, image counts for
everything while talent
means nothing.
I try to put the best face
on worst case. As long as
athletes like Roethlisberger,
Grimsley and Reddick
exist, I’m not the dumbest
person on earth. I’m too
poor to be that stupid.
