Heads up, all Houston County
golfers!
The Houston Home
Journal sports department is
putting together a new regular
feature aiming at improving your
understanding of the game of golf
and the way you play out of the
course.
For this "Ask the Pros" column,
we are asking you, the avid golfer,
to submit any question you may
have concerning the rules of the
sport or your golf swings, strokes
and putts. We will then forward
your question to a local golf pro
from one of five Houston County
golf clubs, and that pro will in turn
answer the question. That answer
will appear in the Home Journal.
Send your questions,
including your name and
where you live, via e-mail to
mbrowrk® evansnewspapers .com
or by regular mail to the Houston
Home Journal, attn: sports,

Whitaker, Red Sox drop Eagles

The win
helped the Red Sox jump
up in the Middle Georgia
Baseball League standings
to third, a game back from
the Tigers who are 12-5.
The Eagles, who have
now lost three straight,
slipped down to 11-6 and
the Nationals, who will
play the Red Sox Friday at
Peach County High School,
stay alone in first place at
12-3.
Whitaker, who accord
ing to Georgia Southern
University’s website infor
mation made five appear
ances for the Eagles of
Statesboro in the 2006 sea
son, gave up seven hits and
walked just two in addition
to his 15 whiffs.
Not only did he receive
more than enough help
at the plate (one Red Sox
coach commenting it was
their best hitting perfor
mance in a while) but got
solid defensive support in
the outfield.
NickChemey, a Northside
Eagle at heart and the Red
Sox catcher, hit a two-out,
two-run single in the bot
tom of the first off Eagles
starting pitcher William
Alexander.
In the bottom of the sec
ond, Alexander gave up a
leadoff double to Jay Phillips
but worked his way out of
trouble and kept it a 2-0
game with three straight
outs.
But the Red Sox added
a run in the home third
as Chris Wilson, the leadoff
batter from Peach County,
started things with a bunt
single.
He stole second base
and scored on Whitaker’s
ground-rule double. Again,
Alexander avoided more
trouble by getting the next
two outs.
The only home run of
the evening - and the first
Eagje run - came off Eddie
Sasser’s bat at the start of
the fourth.

up eight hits. Perry had to
come back from a 3-1 deficit,
and did so scoring six runs
in the bottom of the fifth.
Evan Jones drove in four
runs in the game on three
hits. He gave the Panthers
their first run with a single
that brought in Sam Kinnas
in the home first.
In throwing three shut
out innings to start the
game, Kyle Jones got a 6-4-3
double play started by Jimi
Wilson at shortstop in the
top of the first and a perfect
third inning with Sullivan
deYampert making all three
plays from third base.
But the Mavericks loaded
the bases with one out in the
top of the fourth on three
hits, including a bunt single.
The tying run scored on a
groundout. On a hit to cen
terfield, Macon scored twice
to lead 3-1.
Evan Jones led off the
home fourth with a home
run (3-2). The Panthers had
to play some defense in the
top of the fifth to keep it a
one-run game.
The Mavericks put two
runners on with two outs.
Wilson knocked down a ball
hit up the middle, and he
threw home to catcher Jeff
Stewart for an inning-ended
force out.
Perry’s outburst in the
home fifth began as Brad
Knowles reached on an error
and J.R. Lassiter sacrificed
him over to second. Tommy
Turner singled to left, and
Kyle Jones followed by hit
ting a 3-2 pitch to left to tie
the score at 3-all. With the
bases loaded, Kinnas hit into
a fielder’s choice that broke
the tie.

the bases full and found a

Odds are the “first” train

Perry Horseshoe Pitching

Not even the fact the first
five letters of his name were

past weekend.
Competing in Class A -
there were only three total
classes in this particular
tourney; B and C being the
others - he finished with a
1-3 record.
That only enabled him to
capture fourth and that only
via the fact he scored more
points than Bert Johnson
who also finished 1-3.
Johnson also had more
ringers, 80 for him to 74
for Clark, and a better
ringer percentage, 40 to 37.
But Clark garnered more
