Persia?Disaster Caused by an Earth
quake: A dispatch to a news agency
from Teheran says that the earthquake
shocks recorded on almost every seismograph
in the world on January 23
destroyed several villages in the province
of Luristan, western Persia. According
to this dispatch, between 4,000 and
5,000 persons' were killed, while thousands
more were injured. Thousands of
persons are campeu on the hills and there
has been much suffering. Well-informed
travelers say that communication with
western Persia is by ox team only, and
even in that way only at infrequent intervals,
which probably accounts for the
delay in receiving news of the disaster.
Cuba?To Prevent any Insurrection:
President Gomez's determination to adopt
a "mailed fist"' policy, if necessary, to
preserve the new republic, was indicated
last week by the Supreme Court's order
for the prosecution of all those who circulate
false stories concerning discontent
and insurrection on the island The order
was issued at Gomez's demand, and is
intended to reach, among others, certain
newspapers that are said to have published
unwarranted stories of civil strife.
Gomez is particularly determined to
makce the revolutionary "game" unsafe
in Cuba and his' strenuosity is such that
it is believed he is only waiting the opportunity
to order the execution of some
of the would-be revolutionists to prove
the unpopularity of spreading sedition.
Mexico?Suffering from a Volcanic
hruption: The people of the vicinity of
Colima volcano are greatly terrorized by

siu|7uuu ui unusuai violence. It is
stated that a pillar of fire shot from the
crater several hundred feet into the air
and that there was a heavy fall of ashes
in the towns of Colima, Tuxpan and other
nearby places. Many people fled to the
hills. The flames have started forest
fires upon the sides of the mountain and
property is endangered. An enormous
flow of lava is represented. The small
villages at the base of the mountain nave
been deserted by their inhabitants.
A Tariff Conference: From all parts
of the country prominent men have
gathered at Indianapolis, Ind., for the
National Tariff Commission Conference.
James W. Van Cleave, president of the
National Association of Manufacturers,
made one of the principal addresses, in
which he attacked the present tariff
forming machinery. He advocated a permanent
tariff commission along the lines
recently advocated by Andrew Carnegie.
"Our object is to take the tariff out of
partisan politics and keep it out,*' he
declared. Senator Owens, of Oklahoma,
uiso advocated a permanent non-partisan
commission. He thought the duty should
be on luxuries and removed, as far as
possible, from the necessities of life.
