He IS the Weigher For the Durham |Coal
Mines In North Georgia,
It has been generally believed that
Charles Reid was sent Ho the Chatta>
hooehe Brick Company’s camp but
such was not the case,-says-the Macon
Telegraph.
Reid was sent to Durham Coal ’
Mines in the extreme northern part of
the state, and from a letter written by
him to a friend in Macon, it is learned
that he is weigher for the mines.
The work, he said, is pleasant and
does not require hard labor. He
sleeps with the guards and eats with
them, getting the same fare, and al
together he has found prison life far
more pleasant than he ‘expected.
This will be good news to "his friends.

The New Dress Trimmings*
The new dress trimmings for the
coming season are gorgeous in color and
design. Jet will be used on both skirts
and waists, but on silks and velvets ex
clusively, ■ while for handsome cloth
gowns braids, both silk and wool, will
be extensively employed.
The bolero and eton effects in jet, so
popular last season, will be replaced by
jet blouses or low necked jacket effects.
The designs of these jet trimmings are
more elaborate than any used heretofore
and the beads much larger. These trim
mings come in all the newest shades and
in almost as many designs as there are
flowers in the fields. For evening wear,
cut steel, pearls and sets jeweled in col
ors will be used, harmonizing rather
than contrasting with the material and
color of the gown.
The braid sets used on cloth gowns
are as elaborate and often quite as ex
pensive as those of jet and jewels. The
blouses, which are either low or high
necked, are of braid woven back and
forth so as to show the goods beneath.
In some patterns the little squares and
diamonds thus formed are filled in and
further ornamented by wheels or other
simple patterns worked in silk to match
the braid. The effect is very 1 like Mex
ican drawn work. The skirts of these
gowns are to be trimmed with panels of
braid in the same pattern, tapering from
the foot of the skirt to the waist line,'
or with row after row of braid of the
same width. On some of the more elab
orately trimmed cloth gowns there will
be, so the tailors say, more than 200
yards of braid used —New York Sun.

SHELVES FQR BOOKS.
What Can Be Done at Home With Boxes, '
Hammer and Nall's.
Shelves and cases for books are al
ways useful and those may be made at
home by women who are handy with
tools and paint brush. Where space is.
limited hanging shelves recommend
themselves. A set of corner shelves,
the subject of an illustrated description
in The Woman’s Home Companion, is
here suggested as a good model. It will
not be a difficult matter to duplicate
this if due attention is paid to the di
rections here reproduced from the jour
nal in question:
Good boxes of various sizes can be
found at the grocery store. The nest of
corner shelves is found with two boxes
. fitted with shelves. To fasten the shelves
screws should be driven into the ends
of them through the side boards of the
boxes. Flat headed screws 2 inches long
piay be used for this purpose, so‘that
when the woodwork is painted the
means of fastening will be invisible.
New sides can be added to them, the
lower ends of which are cut in the form
of brackets. The cornice molding is mi
tered around the top, and the woodwork
painted.
To finish the woodwork well, give it
several successive thin coats of “inside”

paint of some desirable color to match
the woodwork in a room in which it
may be placed. After the first coat is
applied and is thoroughly dryi the sur
face should be sandpapered, to take off
the rough places and give it a smooth
finish preparatory to the second coat.
Three coats will be quite sufficient for
the average wooden box, as they will
hide all unsightly places that may have
appeared on the unpainted surfaces.
Such a nook can be made to accom
modate miny books and odd pieces of
bric-a-brac, as well as some cups and
small pitcl.ers. The addition of curtains
on rods will improve the general ap
pearance, and such a nook should be a
very useful affair in a library, sitting
room or bedroom
