James Rollin Wells, 76, of Winder, died
Wednesday, November 28, 2007.
Bom in Barrow County, he was the son
of the late Mack Conrad
and Annie B. McDaniel I
Wells. He attended The BWS
Church of Winder and
was a veteran, having
served in the United States Air Force.
Survivors include a son, Tim Wells,
Decatur; one grandchild; sisters, Velda
King and Reba Brewer, both of Winder,
Janet L. David, Bethlehem.
Funeral services were held Thursday,
November 29, at Smith Memory Chapel
with the Rev. Lee Lovett officiating.

Braselton
Eulene Grier Baird, 93, of Braselton,
died Tuesday, November 27, 2007.
Bom in Jackson County, she was the
daughter of the late Richard and Hattie
White Grier. She was a
seamstress and a mem
ber of Zion Baptist
Church. Mrs. Baird
was preceded in death
by her husband, Ira
Lee Baird; daughter,
Clarice M. Wheeler;
son. Jack W. Baird.
Survivors include
sons, Randall L. Baird, Gillsville, Terry
R. Baird and Norman Baird, both of
Braselton; eight grandchildren; thirteen
great-grandchildren; and one great-great-
grandchild.
Funeral services were held Friday,
November 30, in the chapel of Evans
Funeral Home. Burial was in the Zion
Baptist Church Cemetery in Braselton.

‘Bird’ Thrasher
Winder
Ernest "Bird" Thrasher, Jr., 76, of
Winder, died Tuesday, November 27,
2007.
He was a native of Barrow County and
was the son of the late E.T. Thrasher, Sr.,
and Bessie Pierce Thrasher. He was a
retiree of the Stepan Company and was a
member of Cedar Creek Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by a son, Ricky
Thrasher. Mr. Thrasher was a veteran,
having served in the United States Army.
Survivors include his wife, Mary
Thrasher, Winder; children, Leslie
Thrasher, Carlton, and Pant Parker,
Winder; sister, Evelyn Hanson, California;
five grandchildren; and two great-grand
children.
Funeral services were held Thursday,
November 29, in the chapel of Carter
Funeral Home with the Revs. Virgil
Vickers and Shuford Jones officiating.
Burial was in Barrow Memorial Gardens.

Michael Joy
Pendergrass
Michael D. Joy, 56, of Pendergrass,
died Friday, November 23, 2007.
He was bom in Hall County on October
7, 1951, and was the son of James and
Edith Joy of Gainesville. He was a
mechanic and a born-again Christian. Mr.
Joy was preceded in death by a brother,
Danny B. Joy.
Survivors in addition to his parents
include his wife, Shelby Joy, Pendergrass;
sons, Dustin Cody Joy and Jeremy Scott

Hoschton
Marcella Goff, 70, of Winder, died
Friday, November 30, 2007.
A native of Vinton County, Ohio, she
was the daughter of the late Arthur and
Edna Seitz Huffman. She was a home
maker.
Survivors include her husband, Marlin
F. Goff, Winder; son, Fredrick Goff,
Mystic, Conn.; daughter and son-in-law,
Angela and Allen Boatright, Snellville;
sisters, Bonnie Hays, Gainesville, Patty
Autry, Winder, Donna Gangewere and
Jody Gee, both of Chillicothe, Ohio;
brothers, Ronald Huffman and Gary
Huffman, both of Ohio, and Donald
Huffman, of Pennsylvania; five grand
children; three great-grandchildren; and a
number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral and burial services will be
under the direction of Ware Funeral Home
in Chillicothe, Ohio.

Herbert Roberts
Pendergrass
Herbert Allen Roberts, 79, of
Pendergrass, Hollysprings Community,
died Sunday, December 2, 2007.
He was born in
Jackson County, the son
of the late Guy and Vada
Skelton Roberts. He was
an active member of the
Hollysprings United Methodist Church,
having served in various positions, and
was a member of the Men’s Club. He
was a member of the Jackson County
Cattlemen’s Association, a founding
director of the Plainview Fire Department,
United Auto Workers Local #10 member,
former council member of Sugar Hill,
Jackson County Farm Bureau member,
Kester’s Breakfast Club member, and a
Maxon. He retired from General Motors,
was a cattle and poultry producer, and
served in the United States Air Force.
Survivors include his wife, Elsie
Bridges Roberts, Pendergrass; sons
and daughters-in-law. Bob and Melody
Hadaway, Fairbanks, Alaska, John and
Nelda Hadaway, Snellville; daughter-in-
law, Amy Roberts, Buford; grandchil
dren, Olivia Roberts, Buford, Hannah,
Ali and Jed Hadaway, all of Alaska;
nephew and niece. Miles and Marion
Motes, Eastanollee.
Funeral services were held Tuesday,
December 4, in the chapel of Evans
Funeral Home with the Revs. Tom Fish
and Bob Lewis officiating. Burial was in
Broadlawn Memorial Gardens in Buford.

David L. Weeks, 91, of Hoschton, died
Sunday, December 2, 2007.
He was bom on November 23, 1916,
in Aledo, Ill., and lived
in metro Atlanta for the
past 47 years. He was a
member of the Hoschton
United Methodist
Church, as well as a charter member and
chairman of the building and ground com
mittee for nearly 38 years at the St. James
United Methodist Church in Atlanta. He
was a World War II veteran, and would
readily tell you of his war experiences and
pride in serving his country as an aviator.
After the war, he entered the insurance
industry in southern Illinois, and later
moved to Atlanta, where he served as an
insurance executive for many years. He
was past president of the Southeastern
Claims Association, and retired from
American Southern Insurance Company.
He was loved by his family, friends, and
business associates for his quick wit and
incredible kindness, loved ones stated.
Mr. Weeks was preceded in death by
his cherished wife, Vivian; and a son,
David J. Weeks.
Survivors include a son and daugh-
ter-in-law, James Daniel and Kathryn
Weeks, Hoschton; daughter and son-in-
law, Nancy and Elmo Fortune, Signal
Mountain, Tenn.; grandchildren, Rachel
Weeks Whitaker, Angie Weeks, Josh
Giles, Isaac, Joe, Jennifer and Jocelyn
Weeks; great-grandchildren, Katie Lynn,
Donna Joe, Faith Ann, Brayden and
Brianna; brother, Eddie Weeks, Aledo,
Ill.; nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be held Thursday,
December 6, at Hamilton Mill Memorial
Chapel with the Revs. Paul Youngblood
and Luis Ortiz officiating. The family will
receive friends Wednesday, December 5,
from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the
funeral home.

Elinor Boyd
Winder
Elinor Johnson Boyd, 89, of Winder,
formerly of Savannah, died Saturday,
December 1, 2007.
A native of Jackson County, she was
the daughter of the late Henry and Resha
Elder Johnson. She and her husband
owned and operated Boyd’s Drug Store
in Savannah. She was a member of the
Winder First United Methodist Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Ann B.
Pilgrim, Winder; sons, Thomas M. Boyd,
Lawrenceville, and William G. Boyd,
LaFayette; sisters-in-law, Janette M.
Johnson, Jefferson, and Mary B. Cobb,
Athens; and four grandchildren.
Graveside services were held Tuesday,
December 4, at Jackson Memorial Park
with the Rev. Larry W. Rary officiating.

Sara Seanor
Hoschton
Sara Levenia Seanor, 78, of Hoschton,
died Saturday, December 1, 2007.
Bom in Gadsden, S.C., she had lived
in the metro Atlanta area for the past 12
years. She was a homemaker, a member
of the Air Force Association, member
of the Eastern Star, and member of St.
Mary and St. Martha Episcopal Church in
Buford. Mrs. Seanor was a veteran, hav
ing served in the United States Air Force,
where she served as a Sgt., and was one of
two women from South Carolina chosen
for Air Force service.
Survivors include her husband, Joseph
Seanor, Jr., Hoschton;

Elizabeth Ostine Smith Wilbanks, 93,
of Baldwin, died Sunday, December 2,
2007.
She was born on February 6, 1914,
in Banks County, and was the daughter
of the late Logan Sylvester, Sr., and
Lena Stephens Smith. She was a gradu
ate of Baldwin High School and was
a member of the Broad River Baptist
Church. She was a retired teacher with
the Habersham County School System
with several years service, a member of
the AARP, and member of the Retired
Teachers Association. Mrs. Wilbanks was
preceded in death by her husband, Telford
R. Wilbanks; daughter, Priscilla Waters;
grandson, Kevin Galloway; sister, Isabel
Ervin; and brothers, Bruce, Happy and
Clayton Smith.
Survivors include daughters, Paula
Haynes Hudgins and Leila McDowell,
both of Gainesville, Sylvia Mason, Phyllis
Johnson and Rosemary Williams, all of
Baldwin, Elaine Maxwell, Americus,

Jack Park, 82, of Auburn, died
Wednesday, November 28, 2007.
Born in Barrow County, he was the
son of the late John "Hulon” and Ella
Davis Park. He was a member of Eastside
Baptist Church, the Adult IV Sunday
school class, and was a deacon. He was
retired from Coats & Clark Textile.
Survivors include a brother, Joe Park,
Buford; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife,
Faye Williams Park.
Funeral services were held Saturday,
December 1, at Smith Memory Chapel
with the Revs. Johnny Wright and Bro.

Kenneth David Hatcher, 51, of
Gainesville, died Saturday, November 24,
2007.
He was bom on December 22,1955, the
son of Ruby S. Hatcher
of Gainesville and the
late Bunion David
Hatcher. He was a mem
ber of Hopewell Baptist
Church. He was formerly employed by
Rockwell Industries. Mr. Hatcher was
a veteran, having served in the United
States Navy for four years.

Joanna Whitfield, 74, of Commerce,
died Tuesday, December 4, 2007, at her
residence.
She was bom in Jackson County,
the daughter of the late Roy and Ruth
Williams Crane.

Floyd Raymond Vandenack, 68, of
Commerce, died Wednesday, November
28, 2007, at his residence.
Born in Sentinel, Okla., he was the son
of Ruth V. Dryden Peoples and the late
Floyd Ray Vandenack.

Charles Barrett
Carnesville
Charles E. Barrett, 90, of Carnesville,
formerly of Cornelia, died Monday,
December 3, 2007, at a private care facil
ity, following an extended illness.
He was born on November 1, 1917, in
White County, the son of the late Gilbert
and Molly Oaks Barrett.
He was a farmer and was
Baptist. He was a vet
eran, having served in
the United States Army
Air Force during World War II, having
served as a member of the West Coast
Defense Command. He was a member
of the Hebron Lodge #564 F.& A.M. and
the Red Hill Chapter #417 Order of the
Eastern Star. Mr. Barrett was preceded in
death by a brother, John Barrett; sisters,
Kathleen Hulsey and Rosa Lee Barrett;
and a grandchild, Christopher Poole.
Survivors include his wife, Sally
Barrett, Carnesville; sons, Kelvin Poole,
Crawford, Kerwin Herrin, Flowery
Branch, Jonathan Barrett and Edward
Barrett, both of Carnesville; sister,
Montine Copeland, Gainesville; brothers,
Janies Barrett and Tom Barrett, both of

Cornelia
Jerry Dwayne Helton, 28, of Cornelia,
died Saturday, December 1, 2007, fol
lowing injuries sustained in a motorcycle
accident.
Born on April 14, 1979, in Habersham
County, he was the son of Jerry Helton
and step-mother, Theresa Helton of
Cleveland, and mother, Donna Fuller, and
step-father, Vince Ferrera, Gainesville.
He was a self-employed dry wall installer
and was Baptist. Mr. Helton was preced
ed in death by his grandfather, William
Armour.
Survivors in addition to his parents,
include fiance, Amanda Harkness,
Cornelia; daughter, Desiree Helton,
Gainesville; sons, Christian Diaz Helton,
Gainesville, Donovan Helton, Decatur;

Eleanor Williams
Eleanor Bagwell Williams, 93, died
Saturday, November 24, 2007.
Born in Forsyth County, she lived most
of her life in Hall County, and was the
daughter of the late Janies and Terrie
Bagwell. She worked for the Chestatee
Regional Library during the 1970s and
1980s, and was affectionately known as
the “Bookmobile Lady”. She was a mem
ber of Flowery Branch Baptist Church for
79 years. Mrs. Williams was preceded in
death by her husband, Virgil "Barefoot”
Williams; grandson, Marc Williams;
son-in-law, Irvin Peck; brother, Clarence
Bagwell; and a sister, Leona Waldrip.
Survivors include daughters and son-
in-law, Theresa Peck, Dacula, Wilma and
Hannie Conner, Flowery Branch; sons
and daughters-in-law, Kenny and Kathy
Williams, Lee’s Summit, Mo., Phillip and

Bobby Lee Burks, Sr., 60, of Auburn,
died Friday, November 30, 2007.
He was bom in Gwinnett County, the
son of Mary Day Burks of Auburn and
the late Curt Burks. He was a retired
maintenance worker in the paint manu
facturing industry, and was a veteran,
having served in the United States Army
during the Vietnam war. Mr. Burks was
preceded in death by his wife, Lavem
Brannon Burks.
Survivors in addition to his mother,
include sons, Mark Burks, Braselton, and
Lee Burks, Jr., Jefferson; a brother, Jimmy
Burks, Auburn; and five grandchildren.

She was bom in Heard County, the
daughter of the late

Harris. She was a

by her husband, Fred
Felton Odom.

Mozell Shirley Neese Holmes, 84, of
Jefferson, died Tuesday, December 4,
2007.
Bom in Seneca, S.C., she was the
daughter of the late
Odell and Leila Carter
Shirley. She was a
retired spinner with the
Jefferson Mill and was
Baptist. She enjoyed
being a mother, grand
mother, mentor and
friend to everyone,
loved ones stated.
Mrs. Holmes was preceded in death by
her husbands, W.P. Neese and Dewey

Survivors include daughters and sons-
in-law, Leila and Wayne Daniel, Buford,
Carol and Thomas Beck, Commerce, Polly
and Hugh Jones and Debbie Holmer and
Gary Fricks, all of Jefferson, Barbara and
Hurbert Carlan, Homer; daughter-in-law,
Mae Neese, Pendergrass; sons and daugh-
ters-in-law, A.C. Neese, Athens, Clarence
and Janet Neese, Eatonton, and Dewey
and Tammy Holmes, Jefferson; sister and
brother-in-law, Laura and Henry Colman,
Gainesville; 25 grandchildren; 46 great
grandchildren; five great-great-grandchil-
dren; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Wednesday,
December 5, in the Diamond Hill Baptist
Church with the Rev. Donald Tritt offici
ating. Burial was in church cemetery.
Evans Funeral Home, Jefferson, was in
charge of arrangements.

Vernelle Hubbard
Lula
Vernelle Maney Hubbard, 65, of Lula,
died Monday, December 3, 2007, at her
residence following an extended illness.
Bom in Banks County on July 20,
1942, she was the daughter of the late
Edgar and Vera Crumley Maney. She was
a member of Rock Springs Baptist Church
and attended Cornelia C.H. Church. She
enjoyed spending her time gardening and
reading, according to loved ones. Mrs.
Hubbard was also preceded in death by a
sister, Joyce Lord.
Survivors include her husband, David
Hubbard, Lula; sons and daughters-in-law,
Eddie and Robin Hubbard, Watkinsville,
Cary and Tina Hubbard, Gainesville; sis
ters and brother-in-law, Brenda and Harold
Cash and Gwen Maney, all of Homer;
brother-in-law, Mike Lord, Commerce;
and four grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Wednesday,
December 5, in the chapel of McGahee-
Griffin & Stewart Funeral Home with
the Revs. Ross Palmer and Tony Royston
officiating. Burial was in Rock Springs
Baptist Church Cemetery.
