. REM ARKABLE TRIAL.
Mr. Ke< ue, manager of a Metropolitan The.
intro, was indicted for the murder wf Mr. Jones,
• manager of a rival theatre in the same town.
It appeared there had been a violent dispute ra
ging between the two managers for some time.
f One night Mr. K. suddenly entered among a
party of young men at a hold, and rubbing
his hands with joy, exclaimed, “Wi.l . Mr.
Junes has given up the ghost!”
Before another word was said, a man came
• into tho room, and announced that Mr. J. hud
been murdered, just without the city. Every
rye fell upon Keene. Hard words that had
been said by him of the deceased were rennin
bored, and the joyful manner in which he
brought the first tidings of his death. I!e was
I arrested. Il was thought the jury would haw
agreed on a verdict of guilty, but for tho ex-
I aminatiou of the last witness, which put n new
I gloss on the whole aftaiu It was conducted
on this wise:
I Counsel for daf. Do you know tho prison-

I Wit nest. Y es, si r.
I Counsel. Do you know whether any dis.
I ‘puto has heretofore existed between the defen-
JI ilunt a»d the deceased?
»' Witness. Yes.
■A Cun you say in what the alterca-
j, 11 m originated?
Witness. Yes. 1 had left the theatre im
der the management of Mr. Keene, and had
gone to Mr. Jones. I acted the ghost in I lam
let. Mr. F.-eene wanted me to come back to
him. I could not do it without offending Mr.
Jones, and here arose the quarrel between the
two managers. But on the day of Jone’s de
cease, he had consented to give me up, and I
saw Mr. Keene in the evening and .announced
lo him the fact. He was much delighted to
have carried his point,Ar said he would hurry o
ver to his companions at the hotel, and tell them
that Jones had given up his ghost, and that
peace was now restored between them.
The Jury consulted together a few moments
and pronounced defended “not guilty.” It
was subsequently discovered (hat the deceased
had been killed and robbed by a highwayman
called Traverse.
TEXAS.
Our advices from Texas are to the begin
ning of the month. The hostile ships of the
Mexicans had disappeared from the coast;
and instead of invading armies, we hear of
Mexican traders resorting to the towns of Tex
as, for the purpose of bartering goods. The
immigration of people from the United States,
continued.
Mr. David Burnet, an ex-president, has
declined being considered a candidate for the |
chief-magistracy, at the election next fall. .
He at the sumo time recommends that Gen. ;
Lamar be chosen, which will probably be ■
done without opposition. We see that the '
excellent code of Louisiana is made the law
of Texas in civil matters; and that public
opinion is setting strongly in favor of the
rigid punishment of all criminals and cvil-de- I
