1 indicted in boat
hit-and-run death
MILLEDGEVILLE (AP)
- A man has been indicted in
a boating hit-and-run inci
dent on Lake Sinclair that
killed another man.
But charges have been
dropped against two other
people who were arrested in
the death.
Mark Entrekin, 49, who
authorities say was driving
the boat, was indicted by a
Baldwin County grand jury
Tuesday on charges of homi
cide by vessel, reckless oper
ation of a vessel and fail
ure to render aid, Ocmulgee
Judicial Circuit District
Attorney Fred Bright said.
Entrekin was the opera
tor of the deck boat that hit
Mark Baxter and his fam
ily July 1 as they returned
to shore after watching
fireworks from their pon
toon boat, authorities said.
Baxter and his wife were
thrown into the water. The
deck boat kept going.
Baxter’s wife and her
daughter sustained only
minor injuries. Baxter likely
was killed by blunt force
trauma in the impact with
the boat.
James David Burrell,
35, and his wife, Tracey
Burrell, were passengers
on Entrekin’s boat and had

Bright said that he did not

Rulings down photo IDs
for 2006 elections
By ERRIN HAINES
Associated Press Writer
ROME - The same fed
eral judge who threw out
Georgia’s voter photo ID
law last year issued a rul
ing Wednesday that blocks
the state from enforcing
a revised law during this
year’s elections.
The ruling came down less
than an hour and a half
after the Georgia Supreme
Court denied the state’s
emergency request to over
rule a state court order also
blocking enforcement of the
new photo ID law during
next week’s primary elec
tions and any runoffs.
U.S. District Judge Harold
Murphy’s ruling was broad
er, also including the Nov. 7
general elections and run
offs. If the rulings stand,
Georgia voters will not have
to show a government-issued
photo ID to cast a ballot this
year. The state’s primary

elections are scheduled for

Murphy said the state’s
latest attempt at requiring
voter photo IDs was discrim
inatory toward people who
don’t have driver’s licenses,
passports or other govern
ment IDs.
. “That is the failure of this
legislation as it stands at
this time,” he said.
The judge rejected a more
stringent voter ID require
ment in October, saying it
amounted to an unconsti
tutional poll tax because
of the fees associated with
obtaining a required ID.
Earlier this year, the state
Legislature passed a new
law that made the IDs free
and available in each of the
state’s 159 counties.
Murphy commended law
makers for addressing the
problems of the previous
version of the law, but said
more work is needed.
