River Church community church holding services

There is a new church in

Having my deep roots here in Middle Georgia
Over 47 years ago when
Beverly Davis Powell,
a 1955 graduate of
Fort Valley High School, and
I moved to Fort Valley in
April 1959 with our four
month old baby boy, many
considered me a Perry trans
plant with no roots in the
Valley.
That’s because I grew up
in Perry and played basket
ball for Perry High School
when the rivalry between
Fort Valley and Perry had
reached a fever pitch.
In actuality, my ancestral
roots run deeply in Peach
County history -1 am a sixth
generation Fort Valleyan.
Representing the sev
enth generation are my
sons, Bill and Tim, who
grew up in the Valley.
My mother, Margaret Love
Braswell, was born and
Jesus really does loves me, too!
As for us, the love of
God was revealed
by the fact that God
sent His only Son into
the world, that through
Him we might live. “ (I
John 4:9, Modem)
“Jesus loves me this I
know. For the Bible tells
me so. Little ones to Him
belong. They are weak
but He is strong.”
As the little girl joyfully
sang of Jesus’ love, her
younger brother went
about play.
Rewards can be effective way to motivate your child
QUESTION: Isn’t
a mother manipulat
ing her child by using
rewards and punishment
to get him to do what she
wants?
DR. DOBSON: No more
than a factory supervisor
manipulates his employees
by docking their pay if they
arrive late. No more than
a police officer manipulates
a speeding driver by giving
him a traffic ticket. No more
than an insurance company
manipulates that same driv
er by increasing his premi
um. No more than the IRS
manipulates a taxpayer who
files his return one day late
by charging a penalty for his
tardiness. The word “manip
ulation” implies a sinister or
selfish motive of the one in
charge. I don’t agree.
QUESTION: When
would you not recommend
the use of rewards?
DR. DOBSON: Rewards
should never be used as a

The church’s first service
was June 25 and upcoming
preview services will be July
16, Aug. 6, and Aug. 24.
According to Steve Wood,
lead pastor, the launch date
of weekly church services
raised in Fort Valley. She
married William Lee Powell
of Perry in 1932.
They made Perry their
home and raised two boys.
I was born in 1935 and my
brother, Dwayne, in 1944.
My grandparents, Henry
Williamson and Mattie
Rowland Braswell were
native Fort Valleyans.
My great grandfather,
Robert Lee Braswell (1847-
1920) of Fort Valley, fought
with the 57th Georgia
Infantry in the Civil War and
defended Atlanta against
General Sherman’s invad
ing forces.
Robert’s two older broth
ers, William and Samuel,
were killed in the fierce
fighting at Peachtree Creek
during July 1864.
Robert returned to Fort
Valley, married Laura Love,

“Yes, Jesus loves me.
Yes, Jesus loves me. Yes,
“payoff” to a child for not
disobeying. That becomes
a bribe ~ a substitute for
authority. For example,
Mom is having trouble con
trolling her 3-year-old in a
supermarket. “Come here,
Pamela,” she says, but the
youngster screams “No!”
and runs the other way.
Then in exasperation, Mom
offers Pam a lollipop if she’ll
come quickly.
Rather than rewarding
obedience, Mom has actu
ally reinforced the child’s
defiance. Another misuse of
rewards is to pay a child
for doing the routine jobs
that are his responsibility
as a member of the family.
Taking out the trash and
making his bed might be
included in those regular
duties. But when he is asked
to spend half his Saturday
cleaning the garage or weed
ing the garden, it seems very
appropriate to make it worth
his time.

QUESTION: I worry
about putting undue
emphasis on materialism
with my kids. Do rewards
have to be in the form of
money or toys?
DR. DOBSON: Certainly
not. A word of praise is a
great enticement to some
children. An interesting
snack can also get their
attention, although that
has its downside. When my
daughter was 3 years old,
I began to teach her some
early-reading skills, includ

Speaking of family trees,
the Gospels offer two differ
ent genealogies for Jesus.
In Matthew, Jesus’ lineage
is traced from Abraham, a
total of 42 generations.
In Luke, the Messiah’s
ancestry goes back over 70
generations to the first man,
Adam.
The genealogies in
Matthew and Luke differ:

Rev. Payne to lead retreat
Andrew United Methodist Women have
announced plans for their annual “Spiritual
Day Apart,” for all women on July 22, begin
ning at 9 a.m. with a meet-and-greet time
with coffee an doughnuts in the church’s
new community building.
This has become an annual event at the
church.
The program, starting at 9:30 a.m. will
be led by the Rev. Joyce Payne, an ordained
Methodist minister from Bonaire, as well as
a wife, mother and grandmother.
The church is at 2430 Hwy. 127, Kathleen,

hurt, but his automobile
was a mess. We sprayed the
smoldering car with water
and called the police.
It was not until the excite
ment passed that we real
ized our daughter had not
followed us out of the house.
I returned to the den where
I found her elbow-deep in
the large bag of candy I had
left behind.
She must have put a half
pound of chocolate in her
mouth, and most of the
remainder was distributed
around her chin, nose and
forehead. When she saw me
coming, she managed to jam
another handful into her
chipmunk cheeks. From this
experience, I learned one
of the limitations of using
material, or at least edible,
rewards.
Anything the child wants
can be used as reinforce
ment, from praise to pizza
to playtime.

Matthew lists Jacob (not
Isaac’s son) as Jesus’ grand
father. Luke reflects Heli as
Jesus’ grandfather.
That’s because Luke’s
»
Gospel provides the gene
alogy of the Virgin Mary,
whereas Matthew carries
the lineage of Joseph, Jesus’
earthly father.
Although we, as Gentiles,
cannot claim an ancestral
link to Jesus, we are relat
ed to Christ through our
belief. Romans states that
Abraham is the spiritual
father of all who believe.
Further, John declares
that all who receive Jesus,
who believe in His name, are
given the power to become
the sons of God.
QUESTION: What
would you do if you had
an elementary school
child in a chaotic class
room with a disorganized
teacher?
DR. DOBSON: I would
do everything I could to get
my child reassigned to a dif
ferent classroom. Some very
bad habits and attitudes can
develop in 10 months with
an incompetent teacher.
Home schooling or private
education might also be con
sidered, if resources permit.
