Barbara turns serious
KENNETT SQUARE, Pa. (AP)
- Barbara’s condition turned “potentially
serious” again, a day after the Kentucky
Derby winner’s veterinarian gave a more
upbeat report, saying the colt was stable
and resting comfortably.
Dean Richardson, the chief surgeon
at the University of Pennsylvania’s New
Bolton Center, also said the colt faced
“tough odds” and that doctors were look
ing at all possible treatments to keep the
3-year-old comfortable.
Barbara, who shattered three bones
in his right hind leg at the start of the
Preakness on May 20, has undergone
three surgical procedures in the past
week.
On Saturday, Richardson replaced
the titanium plate and 27 screws and
treated two infections.
French star says I'm sorry
PARIS (AP) - French soccer star
Zinedine Zidane apologized for head
butting an Italian opponent during the
World Cup final, saying that he was pro
voked by harsh insults about his mother
and sister.
In an interview with the Canal-Plus
television network, Zidane did not spec
ify exactly what Italian defender Marco
Materazzi said that enraged him, but
said it was about his family.
Zidane and Materazzi exchanged
words after Italy broke up a French attack
in extra-time. Seconds later, Zidane low
ered his head and rammed Materazzi in
the chest, knocking him to the ground.
Zidane was ejected and Italy went on to
win in a penalty shootout.
Hawjs add Claxton as starter
ATLANTA (AP) - Atlanta Hawks' new
point guard Speedy Claxton may not
have had the biggest smile in the room
when he was introduced Wednesday.
“I may be the happiest guy in the
bunch,” said Claxton’s new backcourt
partner, Joe Johnson. "Having Speedy
will definitely free me up to score a lot
more.”
Claxton, 28, signed a four-year deal
worth about $25.5 million with Atlanta.

Young NBA stars ink new deals
MIAMI (AP) - Dwyane Wade signed
a long-awaited contract extension with
the Miami Heat, hours after the league's
moratorium on offseason player move
ment’ended.
The Heat announced the signing but
did not disclose terms of the deal, which
takes effect after the 2006-07 season.
Wade - the MVP of this year’s NBA finals
- will make $3.84 million next year.
In Cleveland, Leßron James agreed
to a three-year contract extension with
the Cleveland Cavaliers, keeping the
All-Star forward with the club through at
least the 2009-10 season.
The contract includes an option that
would allow James to extend the deal
one season, the Cavaliers reported on
their Web site. The contract will take
effect after the 2006-07 season.
In Denver, Carmelo Anthony signed
a 5-year, SBO million contract with the
Denver Nuggets, one that allows him to
opt out after tour years of that deal.

Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger

Roethlisberger, in his first interview
since the June 12 accident, told ESPN's

rammed his motorcycle into a car that
was making a left turn in front of him
on a Pittsburgh street. He did, however,
remember what he was told by people
at the scene.
Roethlisberger underwent seven
hours of surgery to repair a broken jaw
and other facial bones.
Fox, TBS sign deal with MLB
PITTSBURGH (AP) - First-round
playoff games will be shown only on
cable starting next season as part of
baseball’s new seven-year television
deal with Fox and TBS, a total package
worth almost $3 billion.
Turner Broadcasting System also
will televise 26 regular-season Sunday
games in 2008 while eventually cutting
back on its nationwide Atlanta Braves
coverage.
The World Series, All-Star games and
Saturday afternoon telecasts remain on
Fox through 2013, as does one of the
league championship series. The other
LCS - alternating between AL and NL
each year - is still up for bidding.
There is a chance, too, that TBS
could benefit from the deal even sooner.
The network will show all division and
wild-card tiebreaker games, starting this
year.

So if the Boston Red Sox and New
York Yankees finish even in the AL East
this October and just one playoff spot
remains, for example, TBS gets the
game.
“Don’t make me start dreaming,”
Turner Sports president David Levy said.
“I’m looking for a lot of ties.”
Levy said it was too early to speculate
which announcers TBS might want for its
national games.
He also said the network might ‘linker
with Braves” telecasts later this season
to try out different camera angles and
graphics packages for next season.
“We’ve always wanted to be a player
in the postseason market,” he said.
Turner began showing Braves games
locally on WTBS in 1973, then took them
national via satellite four years later.
TBS will show 70 Braves games
nationally next year, then 45 per season
locally through 2013.
Up to 13 of those Atlanta games can
be shown on TBS’ Sunday package.
'Turner Sports has long been familiar
to baseball fans, and we are excited that
their coverage will now extend to all of
our clubs during the regular season,”
commissioner Bud Selig said.
