ALABAMA —Desmond Doss, the only consci
entious objector to receive the Medal of Honor for
non-combat achievements in World War 11, stayed
atop a cliff under attack on the island of Okinawa
to lower 75 wounded soldiers to safety on May 5,
1945. He died in March in Piedmont (pop. 5,120)
at age 87.
ARKANSAS —In 2001, the state honored
Daisy Gatson Bates with a state holiday, the first
African-American woman to achieve the honor.
Bates helped organize and inspire the nine Afri
can-American students who integrated Central
High School in 1957 in Little Rock.
FLORIDA —-The state's first Olympic-size swim
ming pool, the Casino Pool, opened in 1928 in Fort Lau
deidale. The nation's top swimmers, including Katherine
Rawls, who earned more than .50 national titles for swim
ming and diving, trained in die saltwater pool.
GEORGlA —Charles D. Tillman, a composer and
publisher of Southern gospel music, is best known for
writing tlx- music to tlx? 1890 s songs "Life’s Railway to
Heaven” and ”Mv Mother's Bible.” He died in 1943 and is
buried in Atlanta.

KENTUCKY —Open since 1922, Shaheens De
partment Store in Louisville still is owned by the family
of founder Sam Shaheen. The immigrant from Lebanon
first fexind work at tlx? Seal bach Hotel in Louisville, then
saved enough money to buy a dry goods store.
LOUISIANA —One of tlx? nation's leading early
architects was Henry Hobson Richardson, who designed
Trinity Church in Boston and tlx Albany (N.Y.) City
Hall. He was bom in 18.38 at Priestly Plantation in St.
James Parish (pop. 21,216).
MISSISSIPPI —-The Victorian home where the
South's beloved playwright, Thomas Lanier (Tennes
see) Williams, was born in 1911 now serves as the
Mississippi Welcome Center for Columbus (pop.
25,944) and Lowndes County.
NORTH CAROLINA —Lowe's, named
for James Lowe, began as a small-town hardware
store in North Wilkesboro (pop. 4,116), selling ev
erything from horse collars to washtubs to boots.
But partner Carl Buchan foresaw the post-World
War II building boom and began specializing in
building materials in the 19405. Today, more than
1,250 Lowe's stores operate in 49 states.

Historic Site at Greeneville (pop. 15,198) preserves
the two homes, tailor shop and gravesite of Johnson,
who worked his way up from tailor to U.S. presi
dent, serving as the nation’s chief executive from
1865 to 1869.
VIRGINIA —President George Washington
spent his childhood at Ferry Farm on the Rappa
hannock River near Fredericksburg (pop. 19,279).
No structures remain from the time the Washing
ton family lived there, but the farm is an active
archaeological site.
WEST VlßGlNlA —Resurgence of football
at Marshall University in Huntington is the sub
ject of We Are Marshall , an upcoming movie star
ring Matthew McConaughey. The school’s football
team perished in a 1970 plane crash that killed all
75 people aboard.^
