For voluntary workouts,
the Lady Bear players have
turned out in big numbers
day after day. Jones said the
lightest attendance for one
day was 18 while the greatest
number was 24.

the most experience they’ve

My problem is that I

one major drawback. When

I’ve missed many a play try

That should explain some of
my calls on the field.
As a result, I have regressed.

At next week’s University
of Florida camp, Jones is
hoping to build, among other
things, teamwork and team
building through one game
after another against tough
high school competition.
“This is the first time we’ve
taken the volleyball program
to camp, so we’re really excit
ed about that,” said Jones.
“We’ll see what the girls are
made of because we will play
against some of the best from
Florida and some of the best
in southern Georgia.”
Be not worried that the
Lady Bears would be over
whelmed by what they would
see in Gainesville. That’s
what Jones is hoping for. He
said that’s how they will get
better and more prepared for
the likes of Starr’s Mill.
“We mark ourselves based
on Starr’s Mill,” he said. “It’s
just a well-respected program
across the state. We will go
(to Gainesville) and play a lot
of that level.”
It won’t just be a learning
experience for the players, but
the coaches as well. Florida
has one of the top volleyball
teams in the Southeastern
Conference, and Jones said

No, “Polly want a sunflow

That begs the question,
how far have we come from
our barbarian days? We still
have the primal urge to win
and to rejoice in that victory.
It seems, though, that
our pleasures are few and
far between. How often do
we compete in something,
replete with sunflower seeds,
just for the sake of the com
petition?

No, What’s the bonus? If you contract and close on one of
their completed homes within 30 days of the contract accep

and the builder will still pay up to $3,000.00 towards your
closing cost. WOW, I have seen those homes and they are
all brick on Ig. lots with such quality features like custom
cabinets, security systems, sod & sprinklers. Well I heard
that Karen had available a 100% loan program with no PMI! I think that we need
to go visit with Karen again before they are all gone.

work with the Gator coaches
in their program.
“It will teach coach
(Michelle) Christesen and
myself some things that we
can bring back and work on
here,” said Jones. “It’s a win
win situation for everybody.”
Finding a way to make
such a trip fit into everyone’s
schedule was the challenge
in past summers, Jones said.
But he knew this kind of
experience would be helpful,
so before this summer began
he did the research to find a
camp that would work out
for the Lady Bears to attend.
It also helped to find one that
would give them the right
“bang for their buck.”
As for the progression of
Lady Bear volleyball over the
past four years, Jones said
the win total is definitely ris
ing year after year to the
point where last year’s squad
finished at .500 with a school
record number of victories.
The disappointment of the
2005 season, though, was los
ingthe County Championship
game to Warner Robins High
after Houston County had
beaten all three of its county
competitors.
“We’re looking for bigger
and better things,” he said.
“In the little (post-practice)
pow-wow we had, I chal
lenged them that one, we
want to win the County
Championship this year - if
we’re going to win, we want
to win them all - and we want
to have a winning record this
year.”
start reflecting on your evo

compete or don’t compete.
Remember, everything in
life is a contest, and we as a
nation are among the most
competitive people in the
world.
But we have begun to miss
an important ingredient that
is found in sports. We have
evolved past it. We have for
gotten to have fun.
It’s ironic that sunflowers
once represented beauty and
peace, but they have sown
bitter seeds.
