for the future of Commerce

From page 1A
Larry Walker 111, vice-chair
man of the DDA, recently
detailed some of the plans in
a memo to the council.
He specified that if the
City Council agrees, funds
from the sale of the property
would be reinvested in the
downtown area, and that a
greenspace area of at least
10 feet from the sidewalk
would be retained along
Commerce and Ball Street.
Brick pavers matching
those used in the Garden
Park would be installed, and
the gazebo now in place at
the parking lot would be
moved to Big Indian Creek
at a location approved by the
Uptown Perry partnership.
For those who are won
dering, the oak tree now
growing at the comer of
Commerce and Ball would
be retained with surround
ing green space.
In short, the effort would
be to work in conjunction
with the retailer - poten
tially Walgreen’s - to keep
the new use of the prop
erty attractive, and to use
the funds from the sale not
just to beautify Commerce
Street, but to make it a more
appealing entrance to the
downtown area.
William Jackson,
r „ jm#* w •
Chairman of the DDA, points
out that the authority’s “big
push” is Commerce Street,
which, as the main entrance
to the downtown area, is
a mixed stretch of fronts
and backs of buildings, and
needs landscaping to “soften
up” the buildings there.
“We want to control the
growth,” Jackson said in a
recent interview, “and to
have the right atmosphere.
It’s a known fact that when
industries consider an area,
what they want to see is the
downtown area.”
Jackson pointed out that
the downtown should be the
“heartbeat” of the commu
nity, and that he hopes it
will become a center of activ
ity for people of all ages to
enjoy.
The plan, with help from
Joe Gayle, Jr., a Perry native
and architect, would bring
trees, brickwork, parking
spaces and park areas to
Commerce Street, and would,

when funds were avail
able, include a pavilion with
architectural details echoing
the steeple of Perry United
Methodist Church and the
clock tower at the Georgia
National Fairgrounds. This
would be used for the Perry
Farmers Market and for
other activities.
There some big questions
still to be answered at this
point. Will the City Council
deed the property over to
the DDA? Will Walgreen’s
a decision to build on that
land?
And even after that, Kim
Mullins, who is one of the
most enthusiastic backers
of the project, says that-it
won’t all happen overnight.
Still, he explained, he and
the others are volunteer
ing to see the big project
through because they just
want to make Perry a good
place to live for future gen
erations.
