Out with the old, in
with Army blue?
AUGUSTA (MNS) - Fort
Gordon soldiers fond of
wearing their green service
uniforms should strut in
them while they can. When
they look in their closets in
a few years, they’ll only see
blue. Last month, the Army
announced plans to consoli
date its three dress uniforms
- green, blue and white - to
blue.
“It makes sense for us to go
to one traditional uniform,”
Gen. Peter J. Schoomaker,
the Army chief of staff, said
in an Army news release.
“And that’s what wt’ve
done by adopting this blue
Army Service Uniform that
reflects simplicity, quality,
utility and tradition.”
The blue uniform originat
ed as the Continental Army
dress uniform in 1779.
The new Class A uniforms
are expected to hit military
clothing stores during the
fourth quarter of the 2007
fiscal year, the Army news
release said.
Marijuana, cocaine,

ATHENS (MNS)
- Authorities in Barrow,
Clarke and Gwinnett coun
ties have seized more than
1,000 pounds of marijuana,
90 kilos of cocaine and more
than SBO,OOO in drug money
as part of a multicounty
drug investigation that also
has sent nine people to jail.
The investigation started
about three weeks ago as
Athens-Clarke County police
looked into the drugs being
imported into the area and
identified several suspects
from Barrow County.
“We started putting the
information together, and
that’s what led us to Barrow
County,” said Athens-Clarke
County police Lt. Mike
Hunsinger. He added: “We
got the ball rolling.”

Burgess, but he was arrested
only once. The former couple
had a son in November.
An Athens-Clarke
Magistrate Court judge
ordered in May that Burgess
have no contact with Smith
after he was charged with
simple assault. Smith
complained June 12 that
Burgess continually violat
ed the order by calling and
threatening her, according to
police. Police hadn’t arrest
ed Burgess because Smith
failed to keep appointments
with the detective to make
a formal statement, accord
ing to Athens-Clarke police
Capt. Clarence Holeman of
the Criminal Investigations
Division.
On Wednesday morning,
Smith was in the bedroom of
her Reed Court apartment
off Lexington Highway with
her current boyfriend when
Burgess kicked in the front
door and confronted Smith’s
mother in the living room,
according to police.
The victim’s mother shout
ed a warning that Burgess
was coming with a gun, and
the daughter fled with her
boyfriend through a bed
room window, police said.
