■ jan., 1956 - Long lines formed seeking auto tags at courthouse here
Lines of people gathered at the Houston County courthouse this week to get their
automobile license plates at the courthouse for the first time in history.
In the past, tag applications were mailed to the state capitol in Atlanta and issued by
mail. M. H. Boyer has been employed by Tax Collector Florin C. Rainey to handle the
sale of tags here. One man was standing at the door of the courthouse Tuesday morning
when it opened. He said he had been there since 6 a.m.
The lowest priced tag is $7.50 for the smaller cars. Heavier car tags cost more, accord
ing to weight.
The applicant must sign a statement that he has paid all city, county and state taxes
on the car. If he signs the statement and it is not true, ’hel is subject to a fine.
