four miles an hour up hill and
five miles per hour down.
No matter where I visited,
I made it a point to do some
walking around. I called
them jaunts.
I got to see more on foot
than I ever would in a car. I
noticed everything.
One of the first things I
learned at ASU was that I’m
invisible to any human who
is not my age or older.
People refused to make
eye contact. They seldom
greeted anyone they met and
were offended or threatened
if anyone speaks to them.
Hey, it’s a beautiful morn
ing. Say, “Hello!”
Fortunately, I did most
of my walking early in the
morning, before 7 a.m., and
met few people.
Since I didn’t have to dodge
other pedestrian traffic, I got
a chance to see and smell the
scenery.
I have made early morning
jaunts from New York City,
San Francisco, Jacksonville,
Warner Robins, Windsor
Locks, Connecticut, to some
Far Eastern locales with
many hikes in between.
I enjoy walking in cities.
I get to eavesdrop on con
versations. While in San
Francisco, I heard two beg
gars discuss the economics of
competition. One was com
plaining to the other that his
income had fallen from S4OO
a week to S3OO because com
petitors had moved in.
I made a jaunt through
Nordstrom’s during that
jaunt and listened to one
man give makeup tips to
another.
A sad thing I see is lit
ter. I am constantly amazed
how willing Americans are to
trash up their environment.
I call litter the kudzu of
humanity. Nobody wants it,
and nobody will clean it up.
I used to ignore the detritus
of society until I realized I
could combine another exer
cise with walking.
By bending to pick up cups,
wrappers, and, yes, a used
diaper, I’m stretching and
probably use some muscle I
can’t identify.
I’m always amazed to note
that most litter occurs within
10 feet of a trash receptacle.
While walking I can get a
good whiff of my surround
ings. Maybe that’s why walk
ing doesn’t equate to weight
loss. It’s tough to pass the
sweet smell of baking. The
police aren’t the only ones
with a lock on doughnuts.
No matter where you walk,
the cities, towns and coun
tries are teaming with life.
In Washington, D.C., I saw
some of the biggest rats I’ve
ever seen this side of the
Pacific Ocean, and I’m not
talking about politicians.
One rodent was large
enough to pay rent. I gave
him all the sidewalk he
Perry also brought home many awards
including that of camp champs.
In addition, Adam Gibbs was the
jump-off winner, Stephanie Patterson,
Sami Corcoran, Gibbs and Bethany
Loggins earned All-American nomi
nee honors, and Kayla Kratz, Sarah
Evans, Loggins, Dusty McDowell,
wanted.
At ASU, a duck pond was
located near the dorms and
was populated by about 15
adult ducks. While there, 10
ducklings were added to the
mix. Because I walked, I could
easily stop and observe.
Walking allowed me time
to philosophize. Life is beau
tiful but ethereal.
Enjoy the now and drink
Dr. Pepper.

Northern probably had
the advantage of more sleep,
but the Columbus pitcher
threw a great game limiting
Warner Robins to one hit
from Landon Hattaway.
In Friday’s win over
Masters City, Dillon Burgess
and David Doyle each
pitched two-plus innings, and
Landon Hattaway and Avery
Jones each went 4-for-4 at
the plate. The team collected
a slew of home runs. Jones,
Cole McArthur, Doyle and Ty
Odom hit the long balls.
TOURNAMENT OF CHAMPIONS
Warner Robins American
Little League made its first
trip to the Tournament of
Champions in West Virginia
this year.
The tournament for state
winners of the 9-10 baseball
division in southern states
began Saturday and, unfor
tunately for Warner Robins
American, a North Carolina
player was on his way to
a tournament-record perfor
mance.
In a 6-3 win for the
Southwest Forsyth Little
League of Clemmons, N.C.,
Jacob Kennedy pitched a
complete game, hit a grand
slam and drove in a record
five runs for the winners.

This record didn’t last
for long, though, as also on
Saturday Bobby Graven of
Kentucky had seven RBI
in a victory against West
Virginia.
Kennedy held Warner
Robins to three hits. Warner
Robins pitching had problems
with the bases on balls prior
to the slam, which decided
the contest.
Warner Robins American,
or Georgia as the team is
known by in the tournament,
bounced back on Sunday with
a 7-5 win against Citrus Park
Little League of Tampa, Fla.
Warner Robins American had
a 3-2 lead after four innings
then broke things open with
a four-run fifth. That was
important because Florida’s
club had a three-run sixth.
Jake Chastain, who hit a
solo home run, was the win
ning pitcher and Justin Jones
earned a save.
Four Warner Robins bat
ters had two hits each. That
group includes the top three
hitters in the batting order:
Payton Purvis, Hunt Smith
and Cortez Broughton.
Griffin Martin rounded out
the multi-hitters.
