Diverse donors
backing Johnson
ATLANTA (AP)
Democrat Roy Barnes and
Republican Guy Millner,
opponents in Georgia’s 1998
race for governor, have found
some common ground: both
are backing Democrat Hank
Johnson’s bid to defeat U.S.
Rep. Cynthia McKinney.
Barnes, who won the
1998 election, and Millner
are among 40 donors who
have contributed at least
SI,OOO to Johnson since he
forced McKinney into an
Aug. 8 runoff in the July 18
Democratic primary.
McKinney, meanwhile,
has reported no donations
of SI,OOO or more since the
primary.
Under federal law, any
contributions of that amount
or larger must be reported
within two days if they are
received less than 20 days
from an election.
Barnes, a Cobb County
attorney, gave $2,000 on July
25, according to Johnson’s
campaign reports.
“I like Hank; I’ve known
him for a long time,” Barnes
told the Atlanta Journal-
Constitution. “I think Hank
is a very well-qualified fel
low. I think Hank Johnson
is the best-qualified person
in the race.”
When asked about
McKinney, Barnes merely
said, “I think Hank will hold
that job with dignity and
respect.”
Johnson’s campaign says
he has received 600 dona
tions since the primary.
McKinney’s said they did
not know how many contri
butions she has received.
John Evans, McKinney’s
campaign manager, focused
on donations Johnson has
received from Republicans
like former state Rep. Emory
Morsberger of Gwinnett
County and Home Depot co
founder Bemie Marcus and
his wife.

“We know Republicans are
helping him,” Evans said.
“I don’t need to see a finan
cial disclosure report. It’s no
surprise. We’re just doing
everything we can to ener
gize people.”
Kristin Oblander,
Johnson’s fundraiser, down
played the impact Republican
donations have had.
“Since the primary, over
600 contributions have come
in from Georgians of all
walks of life who have inter

McKinnon said.
Some lanes were expected
to be reopened once the sand

McKinnon said the truck
went down the ramp on
Fulton Industrial Boulevard,
which runs underneath 1-20.
It failed to make the turn
and rolled over, with the fuel
running from the truck and
puddling beneath the inter
state.
He said the driver sus
