Cubs trade Maddux
LOS ANGELES (AP) - The Dodgers
acquired four-time Cy Young Award win
ner Greg Maddux from the Chicago
Cubs and shortstop Julio Lugo from
Tampa Bay in trades.
In exchange, the Dodgers sent Gold
Glove infielder Cesar Izturis and $2
million to the Cubs, and minor leaguers
Joel Guzman and Sergio Pedroza to the
Devil Rays.
Maddux, a 327-game winner, waived
his no-trade clause to go to the Dodgers.
He started the season 5-0 but the 40-
year-old right-hander has won only four
games since. He is 9-11 with a 4.69 ERA
in 22 starts.
Sanchez iyired in accident
NEW YORK (AP) - After setup man
Duaner Sanchez dislocated his pitching
shoulder in a taxi accident, the New York
Mets quickly replenished their staff by
acquiring Roberto Hernandez and Oliver
Perez from the Pittsburgh Pirates for
outfielder Xavier Nady.
Sanchez was riding in a cab that got
into an accident near the team’s hotel in
Florida on Sunday night, the Mets said.
He flew back to New York and was being
treated at a hospital.
The Mets expect to learn in about a
week whether Sanchez will need sur
gery. If he does, the right-hander would
miss the rest of the season.
The 41-year-old Hernandez was

Second half play was not
as glorious for International
City. The defense held their
ground but the offensive
squad could not convert
their actions into points.
The Phenix City offensive
line easily outweighed the
Warriors’ defensive line, and
it pushed and pushed hard.
Although this difference
was clear from the sidelines,
the Warrior defense refused
to be intimidated. Donte

SAN DIEGO (AP) - The San Diego
Padres acquired Todd Walker from the

which has been a weak link offensively
for the defending NL West champions.
Tests not good for Lands
NEW YORK (AP) - Tests show that
some of the testosterone in Floyd Landis'
system at the Tour de France was syn
thetic and not naturally produced by
his body as he claimed, according to a
newspaper report.
The French antidoping lab testing the
American cyclist's samples determined
that some of the hormone came from an
external source, The New York Times
reported on its Web site, citing a person
at the. International Cycling Union with
snatched down two intercep
tions while Defrance Leary
of Ft. Valley once again led
the Warriors with eight
tackles. Seanon Dinkins,
from Warner Robins High,
followed with six tackles.
“Special recognition must
be given to Maurice “Big Mo”
Releford, Mike “Stonecold”
Campbell, Daniel “Lil Mo”
Morrison and the rest of the
defensive line for applying
excessive pressure on the
Falcons,” said general man
ager James Hamp.
Offensively the Warriors
just couldn’t put the ball in
the endzone in that critical
second half. Solomon went
17-for-20 with 192 yards in
the air.

The finding undermines the defense
that Landis has stood behind since he
tested positive for an elevated ratio of
testosterone to epitestosterone following
the 17th stage of the Tour de France,
where he staged a stirring comeback in
the Alps to make up for a poor perfor
mance the day before.
Landis officially requested the test
ing of his backup urine sample for an
elevated testosterone ratio, and results
were expected sometime this week. If
the “B’ test is negative, Landis would
be cleared. If it's positive, which Landis'
lawyers say they expect, he could be
stripped of his Tour victory and banned
for two years.
lrack coach infer scrutiny
LONDON (AP) - With Justin Gatlin
preparing to defend himself on doping
violations, the spotlight turned squarely
on Trevor Graham, the track coach asso
ciated with at least a half-dozen athletes
who have received drug suspensions.
The sport's international governing
body said Graham could face a two-year
ban if Gatlin, the Olympic and world
champion sprinter, is found guilty of a
second doping infraction.
The International Association of
Athletics Federations would act only if
evidence links Graham to any doping vio
lations and the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency
decides not to take action against him.
