own home.
According to Quality Care
for Children, there are many
things to be considered in
searching for childcare.
The organization has
developed a checklist to
assist parents in knowing
what it is they are looking
for in quality care.
Some things the checklist
includes are hand wash
ing and diapering. Do the
children wash their hands?
Does the caregiver wash
their hands? Where is the
diaper changing area? What
procedures are used to disin
fect toys and equipment?
A caregiver’s policy on
illnesses is also important-
What is the policy on the
exclusion of sick kids? How
are parents notified of out
breaks of contagious diseas
es?
There are many concerns
surrounding meals. What
and when will meals be
served? Do the children
have to eat everything on
their plate? Is food held out
as a reward or punishment?
And of course, is the kitchen
clean?
Toys and activities should
be age appropriate for the
kids, but variety, time and
space are also important
issues.
As with children in school,
parents have a role with the
childcare provider. Some
suggestions made by Quality
Care for Children are to get
to know the other parents
whose children are being
cared for at the same center
and to spend a minute or two
talking with the caregiver
about your child each day. As
often as you are able, drop in
and participate in the activi
ties with your child and ask
them questions about ’what
they do during their day.
Quality Care for Children
also deals with issues of
children with special needs
and inclusion. Inclusive
childcare programs include
children with disabilities
in the typical environment
and enables them to par
ticipate in all daily activities
with typically developing
children. Quality Care for
Children has resources for
children with special needs.
The service can also pro
vide information for other
services such as Childcare
and Parent Services and the
Department of Family and
Children Services.
