Catching up with
Crenshaw in terms of high
school experience is pitch
er Chelsea Burroughs. She
was the one Lady Bear fans
could bank on seeing in the
circle more times than not
in 2005, and she responded
with 18 wins.
“She’s played all summer
long and improved,” said
Griffin. “She’s developed
her curveball. Hopefully we
can add that to her pitches.
“I’m going to lean on
Chelsea. Caitlyn Karrika
also pitches for us, and she
played last year.
“We also have a freshman
pitcher, Brianna Hancock,
who moved here from
Mississippi. She will be able
to help us out.”
But Griffin was not kid
ding around about the
Houston County youth.
Aside from the pitcher’s
spot, she expects to start as
many as three freshmen on
any given date. Also, there
will not be a Lady Bear
junior varsity team.
The youngsters have the
opportunity to grow up in
a hurry during Houston’s
run through a Class AAAAA
schedule.
Where to catch catfish
Special to the Journal
Georgia is home to several
species of catfish, including
channel, white, blue, flat
head and bullheads (consist
ing of several similar spe
cies - yellow, brown, snail,
spotted and flat). Following
is a breakdown of some hot
spots:
■ Lake Nottely - Contains
good populations of channel
and white catfish (averaging
one pound or less) and fewer
(but larger) flathead catfish.
■ Lake Tugalo - Contains
an abundant population of
white catfish.
■ Lake Marbury (Fort
Yargo State Park) - Supports
an excellent population of
channel catfish.
■ Lake Oconee - Supports
high numbers of channel,
blue, flathead, white and
bullhead species of catfish.
■ Flint River - Great
location for flathead (5-30
pounds) or channel catfish.

“It’s pretty tough,” said
Griffin about having young
players in the state’s highest
classification. “They’ve been
playing all summer, most
everybody on the varsity
team. Still, our schedule is
pretty tough with Lowndes,
Warner Robins, Tift County.
We’ll just see what hap
pens.”
What will happen first is a
trip to Columbus for a tour
nament hosted by Jordan
High Aug. 18-19.
Then the Lady Bears
spend a weekend in Lowndes
County to get the Region
1-AAAAA season started
■ Andrews Lock and Dam
(Chattahoochee River) -
Best location in southwest
Georgia for catching a flat
head catfish over 20 pounds.
■ Lake Seminole - Good
catches of channel catfish
during summer.
■ Lake Blackshear
- Excellent channel cat
fish spot. Best places are
the main lake and below
Warwick Dam.
■ Altamaha River - Great
location for flathead catfish -
current state record (83 lbs.)
caught here.
■ Satilla River - Excellent
fishing available for chan
nel catfish, white catfish and
several species of bullheads.
■ Southeast Georgia Public
Fishing Areas (including
Evans County PFA, Paradise
PFA, Hugh M. Gillis PFA
and Dodge County PFA) -
Some of the best locations
for channel catfish in south
east Georgia.

“I think we have as good a
chance as any of winning the
region,” said Griffin. “We’re
right there with everybody
else. We’re young, but I still
say they have experience
just from playing ball all
year long.”

Saturday some tires were

Jimmie Johnson had a

Although he was the only

to win the race.

'I imagine this puts us pretty deep/
- Kasey Kahne, after a 36th-place finish Sunday
ish outside of the top 35 at
Indianapolis.
A victory Sunday before
320,000 fans may signal a
change. At the very least,
it allowed him to push his
lead over Matt Kenseth to
107 points heading into next
week’s road-course race at
Watkins Glen, N.Y.
Jeff Burton is third in the
rankings, 375 points behind,
while Kevin Harvick, Kyle
Busch, Mark Martin, Denny
Hamlin, Jeff Gordon, Tony
Stewart and Dale Earnhardt
Jr. make up the top 10.
* The top-10 drivers
after the Sept. 9 race at
Richmond, Va., qualify for
the 10-race Chase for the
Championship.
Kasey Kahne fell four
positions to 11th - and out
of Chase contention - with
a 36th-place finish. He
crashed on the final lap to
drop out of the top 15 in the
race - and the top 10 in the
standings.
“I imagine this puts us
pretty deep,” Kahne said.
“We still have plenty of time

been this way the past two
