from the outfield as
Daryl Ann Thompson made
a catch in right field and
her throw beat the runner
back to first base.
Audrey Clearman and
Thompson broke up the
no-hitter with back-to-back
two-out singles in the fourth
inning. The shutout stayed
in tact until the sixth inning
with two Hornet runs off
relief pitcher Macie Couey.
Hanna Jones drew a walk
to lead off the inning. She
hustled her way to third
base on Jennifer Wrye’s
bunt. Gilliam drew a walk
and stole second base, a
move that drew some pro
test from the John Milledge
coaches.
But the runners stayed
where they were, and
Clearman’s ground ball
plated Jones. Gilliam later
scored on a wild pitch.
Westfield had the tying
runs in scoring position
in the seventh thanks to
Mason Moreland’s two-out
double, but the game ended
on a strikeout.
Gilliam pitched all seven
innings for Westfield with
seven strikeouts and no
walks allowed after the
leadoff batter in the first.
WESTFIELD 9. STRATFORD 3
The Hornet bats were
much more productive when
Westfield took on Stratford
Academy.
The game ended after five
innings due to the 90-min
ute time limit.
Westfield once again
played as the home team,
and when Stratford batted
first against Gilliam that
pesky leadoff walk led to a
run.
In fact, the Eagles didn’t
have a hit in the first
inning, but scored on what
was ruled a wild pitch as
Stratford’s batter missed a
bunt attempt.
Gilliam didn’t allow
another baserunner that
frame, and her offense
responded with a four-run
bottom half.
Moreland led off with a
walk, stole second base and
scored on a hit by Jones.
Clearman’s fly ball to right
fell inside the line fair, and
another walk loaded the
bases.
Here’s where the Hornets
got productive as both Wrye
and Thompson grounded

Stratford booted a third

a 4-1 edge.
Coach Rodney

Westfield loaded the bases

had hits) with no outs in
the third, but the next two

that spun in fair ground in
front of home plate.
That brought Moreland,
No. 1 in the batting order,
up with the bags full, and
her infield hit made it 6-
1. Jones popped a pitch to
right-center for a three-run
triple.
In four innings of work,
Gilliam gave up just one
hit, walked two and struck
out seven. Shae Horsting,
the starting third baseman,
pitched the fifth with two
SPORTS
runs allowed on two hits
and a walk.
Westfield’s offense had a
chance for more runs in the
fourth as Gilliam and Wrye
put runners in scoring posi
tion on hits with no outs.
Stratford got out of that
jam with strikeouts.

In fact, Herrington said,
Vidalia was up 10-7 head

That win, and once the
