but wonder if anyone thought
to label him the Blue Power

As the 2006 high school sea
son approaches, I’m starting
to juggle around a few nick
names that might fit some of
the players to watch out for
in Houston County. Maybe a
name like “Payback” or “Mr.
Universe” or “The Spot.”
This little fixation with
nicknames came after seeing
a program that rated the top
all-time nicknames in sports.
No. 1 was easy to guess:
Earvin “Magic” Johnson.
So many of the names came
from the old-school days, like
“Dizzy” and “Gas House
Gang” and “The Galloping
Ghost.” You definitely know
“The Bear” was on the list as
was “The Babe.”
Some of the ones I would
pick as the most memorable
monikers of all time didn’t
make this particular list. I
couldn’t see how you couldn’t
honor Bob “The General”
Knight. Since I’ve met the
man, I have to stick up for
Evander “The Real Deal”
Holyfield.
Then there’s an old-school
type who is actually honored
in a small way in Americus
on the dedication plaque for
classic Thomas Bell Stadium.
“Shoeless” Joe Jackson, after
his banishment from the big
leagues of baseball, once
found work as a player-man
ager in Americus in those
old Georgia-Florida League
days.
Not much has changed at
the old stadium, still with its
wooden seating. No wonder
an independent outfit want
ed to use it four years ago
to get a league going in the
