Law forcing
hundreds to move
ATLANTA (AP) - Sheriffs
in the Atlanta area have
begun ordering sex offend
ers who live within about a
fifth of a mile of a church to
move or face arrest.
In Cobb County, four regis
tered sex offenders had been
arrested under the provision
of a new state law as of late
last week, authorities said.
Hall County deputies
had arrested five. And in
Gwinnett County, deputies
had told six offenders to
move because they were too
close to churches and arrest
ed one who didn’t comply.
Much of the attention on
Georgia’s new sex offend
er law, which took effect in
July, has focused on bar
ring offenders from living
within 1,000 feet of school
bus stops.
A federal judge has blocked
enforcement of that provi
sion for now.
The change would have
forced hundreds of offenders
from their homes, prompting
critics to argue it is uncon
stitutional.
But other parts of the
law, introduced by House
Majority Leader Jerry Keen,
R-St. Simons Island, already
are in effect.
“It’s basically not up to
us to decide whether or not
we think it’s fair,” Gwinnett
County Sheriff Butch
Conway said. “We enforce
the laws; we don’t write
them.”
Sex offenders who know
ingly live too close to a
church face a felony charge
that carries at least 10 years
in prison.
More than 10,550 people
are on Georgia’s sex offend
er registry, with about 2,000
incarcerated.

Students return,
with extra police
ATLANTA (AP) - Gilmer
County students returned to
school Monday, with extra
police protection after a sex
ual assault at an elementary
school early Thursday morn
ing.
Uniformed officers from
the Gilmer County Sheriffs
Department and the Ellijay
Police Department will be
at each of the county’s six
schools to monitor the first
day of classes.
The deployment comes
after a member of the Ellijay
Elementary School’s janito
rial staff was attacked early
Thursday morning. Schools
did not meet in the county
on Friday.
“We’re going to have folks
in place at each school,”
Ellijay Police Chief Larry
Callahan said. “Not more ...
as a protection issue, but as
a peace of mind issue.”
