Troop 498 roundup proves successful
Special to the Journal
The Girl Scouts, accord
ing to Linda Stanley, site
coordinator for Perry Girl
Scouts and leader of Brownie
Troop 498, the organization
had a successful round
up recently, but are still
in need of troop leaders.
They are now dealing with
the task of placing approx
imately 45-50 Girl Scouts
from Perry Primary and
Morningside Elementary,
she said.
“We were worried that we
would not have anyone to
sign up and now we need
leaders for these girls,”
Stanley said.

and 430 along with two new
Daisy Troops (kindergarten)
and one new Brownie Troop
(first, second and third
grades).
“It is not necessary to be
a parent or a great crafter,”
Stanley said.
“You don’t even need to
be a camper. We train any
one, as long as they can
pass a criminal background
check.”
The age group they need
the most help with, she said,
is the Junior Girl Scouts
- grades four, five and six -
and some of the third grade
Brownie girls.

“What we really need most
is some of our Girl Scout

At the round-up, leaders,

Pluto's in a predicament
Finally.
I can’t count the
times I’ve looked up
in the sky at night and won
dered: “Is Pluto really a
planet.”
You know. I go to the doc
tor for a checkup but I don’t
ask what’s the latest - hope
fully greatest - news regard
ing colon cancer.
I want to know: “So, doc.
What are you thoughts
onnnn ... whooooo-who
weeee ... next time let me
know you’re going to stick
your gloved finger up there
... Pluto?”
“Is it (Pluto) a solid, or
is it a nasty, sticky I’ll-be
walking-bowlegged-for-a-
week gel?”
I go to my wife. I look at
her. She looks at me. I wink.
She winks. I smile. She
smiles ... mischievously.
“Are you thinking what
I’m thinking,” I ask.
“Are you thinking what
I’m thinking,” she replies.
“Yeah,” I say. “Is Pluto a
planet or what?”
She frowns. I don’t under
stand.
I go to my child.
“Shelbi. Do you think ...”
She interrupts.
“Dad. Are you going to
ask me if I think Pluto is
a planet or more kin to
UB 313,. you know that
celestial body discovered in
the Kuiper Belt that mea
sures roughly 2,397 kilo
meters compared to Pluto’s
2,288?”
“Uh, no,” I cover. “I
was going to ask you if
you thought this tie goes
with this shirt.” (What do
they teach these kids these
days?)

The supplies, according to
a release, are currently being
distributed system-wide,
with Linwood Elementary

their kits this Monday.
As far as background,
Catherine Kriewald,
executive director of the
Houston-Middle Georgia
Chapter American Red
Cross, contacted the school
system about the Kits
for Kidz™ School Supply
Program, which exists to
provide less fortunate chil
dren with school supplies.

and that based on my own
recent experience in chang

Forget world hunger.
Forget fighting in the Middle

Let’s do something really
important. Let’s figure out
if the ninth planet really is
worthy of being the ninth
planet.
“C’mon guys,” I say, “Are
you kidding us? Was this just

Sure, it - knowing-- could

intergalactic travelers in

It won’t make politicians

at a place -235 Celsius.
I suppose I shouldn’t blame
them. I’ve done the astrono
my thing before: telescope +
daughter + backyard = nice
bonding experience.
It’s pretty neat - from a
novice standpoint, but to do
that for eight hours every
day, yeah, I suppose it could
get to be pretty boring.
One astronomer looking
over another’s shoulder, the
first looking in a telescope.
“Mars still there?”
“Uh huh.”
One second later: “How
about now?”
“Uh huh.” .
Two seconds later: “What *
about now?” -
“Uh huh.”
Three seconds later: “And
now?”
“OH MY GOD! ...just kid
ding.” (A little astronomer
humor.)
Still, if they debunk this,
pretty soon other things
we hold true will fall. For
instance, “Lawrence” - not
Bluto - will now be Popeye’s
greatest nemesis, the moon
will no longer be made of
cheese, the Earth will no
longer be the perfect meat
ball - even though it will,
still be full of them - and
Uranus ...
Hmm. Maybe those ’
astronomers and scientists
will make it possible to use
this next time I’m having a
checkup: “You know doctor.
It’s now been proven that
Pluto is indeed a planet.
Perhaps that’s a place bet- .
