Hot summer temps didn’t bother Larry Beck from Warner Robins. He said he and his
group - some of them in their mid-80s, he said - played - and play - 18 holes twice a

“Our play is down,”
Reneau said. “The first
thing in the morning is
great but from noon to four,
you can see ...” as he point

parking lot. “It begins to
pick up after four o’clock,
but even our Fridays are
dead.”
APine Oaks representative
said the same thing. “Early
tee times are crowded,” he
said. “Only the young ones
play in this heat.”
Landings employee
Bill Grigsby said that his
course’s numbers haven’t
gone down because most of
the golfers who play there
come on the weekends.
“Most of our golfers work
Monday through Friday,”
he said. “They play in the
evenings and on Saturday
and Sunday. “They may
have altered their tee times,
but they still play.”
That doesn’t seem pos

105 and 106 degrees.
“Everybody’s numbers
are down,” said Wood.

Locals Toombs, Barbour to
contend in senior tourney
Special to the Journal
Tom Toombs of Perry
and Bill Barbour of Byron
are among the 144 listed
to contend in the 20th
Annual Georgia Senior
Championship, which is
slated to take plate today
through Thursday at the
Cherokee Town and Country
Club in Atlanta.
The competitors are set to
play 18 holes of stroke play
each day with the field being
cut to the low 70 and ties
after 36 holes.
The Georgia Senior
Championship began in 1955
and ran until 1971 before a
15-year hiatus from 1972-
86. Other than the annual
champions’ names, not much
information is available on
the Championship’s early
years. The event was revived
in 1987 and has since been
contested at 16 different
GSGA member clubs in 13
cities. This year marks the
20th annual Championship
since its return.

Hunter course offered in county, slate
Special to the Journal
Hunting season is fast
approaching and it is time
to get ready.
This year there are several
options available so young
hunters can be certified in
the required Hunter Safety
Education Course. One
option is to attend the 10-
hour class.
This can consist of either a
one day class or will be bro
ken up into several evening
classes.
You can go online at
gohuntgeorgia.com to find
the class times, dates and
locations that best suit your
needs. After looking up
the class that you want to
attend, pre-register on the
same website so you may
secure a spot in the class.
You must be present for
the complete class to be cer
tified.
There will be one sched
uled in Houston County
in the month of August,
October and November.
The 10-hour course is
available in other areas as
well and you may attend any
available class.
If the 10-hour course is
not a good option for you, we
also have the Hunter Safety
Education Course now avail
able over the internet or by
obtaining a CD-Rom through
DNR and taking the class on
your home computer.
The student will take a
short exam after completing
each chapter.
After passing all chapters
the results will be printed
and the student is then
required to attend a two
hour class review and take a
final exam.
For the internet class the
website is: beasafehunter.

the first Senior Champion
when the event returned
in 1987, capturing the title
in his hometown at The
Landings Club’s Plantation

A total of 12 men have
won the Skeadas Trophy
since 1987. Bill Ploeger
of Columbus and Spencer
Sappington of Alpharetta
have each won the event three
times, with Sappington the
current three-time defend

Fugate (1990, 1991) and
Atlanta?s Joe Estes (1989,
1998) are the only other
players besides Skeadas to
win multiple titles. Estes
and Sappington are both in
the field this year.
Entries were open to male
amateur golfers age 55 and
older as of Tuesday, who are
GSGA members and Georgia
residents. The field of 144
