Folk pottery museum opens in Northeast Ga.
GAINESVILLE (AP) -
After a seven-year quest,
the Folk Pottery Museum
of Northeast Georgia has
opened in Sautee Nacoochee,
giving visitors a chance to
discover the history of folk
pottery in the region.
The museum, which
opened Saturday about four
miles southeast of Helen
in the Georgia mountains,
details the role of pots in
rural life in the past, begin
ning in the 1800 s, as well as
how the pots are made.

to display their collection of
more than 150 folk pots dat
ing back to the 1840 s.
They decided on a museum
in an effort to give back to
the community, said Michael
Crocker, himself a folk pot
ter and co-curator for the
museum.
The museum is connected
to the community center,
which is a former school
house that also has a the
ater, art studio, gallery and
local history museum.
Several exhibits - includ
ing a kitchen, a moonshine
still, a smokehouse and a
spring house - show how pot
last November, and came
despite stepped up security
across the country.

FVSII saddles up
for children again

Fort Valley State
University will host its ninth
annual Saddle Up Trail
Ride for St. Jude Sept. 28 at
the university's equine cen
ter. The event runs from 11
a.m. to 1 p.m. and 5-7 p.m.
According to event coordina
tor and FVSU Professor Dr.
Curtis Borne, the annual
ride, which benefits the St.
Jude Children's Research
Hospital in Memphis, Tenn.,
is expected to draw about
100 participants this year.
"We've raised nearly $2,000
over the past eight years,"
Borne said. "This year
we hope to raise $500."
The event raises funds for
research of diseases such
as leukemia, Hodgkin's dis
ease, sickle-cell anemia,
pediatric AIDS and other
