Atlanta bombing
SMYRNA (AP) - President
Bush invoked Atlanta’s own
brush with terrorism, the
1996 Olympic Park bomb
ing, during “a progress
report” speech Thursday on
the war on terrorism, saying
America is safer than it was
before the Sept. 11 attacks.
But he said more needs to
be done, calling on Congress
to pass legislation autho
rizing military tribunals
to try suspected terrorists
like alleged Sept. 11 mas
termind, Khalid Sheikh
Mohammamed, who has
been moved to Guantanamo
Bay, Cuba, for trial.
“In Atlanta, you know
the pain of terrorism first
hand. This summer marked
the 10th anniversary of
the bombing in Centennial
Olympic Park. That was
the act* of one mad man,”
Bush said, referring to anti
government extremist Eric
Rudolph, who 'was con
victed of the park bombing
and others in Atlanta and
Birmingham, Ala.
“Next Monday is the fifth
anniversary on the attack
on our nation. On that day,
we awoke to a new kind of
terrorism. Instead of a local
ized strike, we faced mul
tiple attacks by a network

ing the speech at the Cobb
Galleria Centre in Smyrna.
Bush’s speech was one
in a series he is giving in
advance of the anniversa
ry of the Sept. 11 attacks.
Bush was speaking before a
friendly crowd of supporters
at the conservative Georgia
Public Policy Foundation, an
Atlanta-based conservative
think tank.
“We love you Mr.
President,” read one sign
from a person in the audi
ence.
Georgia Gov. Sonny
Perdue, a Republican fac

joined the president at the
Cobb County speech. Perdue
also was the first to greet
the president when he
stepped off Air Force One at
Dobbins Air Reserve Base in
Marietta.
“Mr. President, Georgia
loves ya,” Perdue said in a
short introduction of Bush
at his speech.
Perdue said Bush “has the
heart and the courage to con
front our enemies abroad.
He understands the urgency
of defending our borders.”

A judge sentenced a Madison
County man to 30 years in
prison Wednesday after find
ing him guilty of shooting
a Madison County sheriffs
deputy last year.
Northern Circuit Superior
Court Judge Thomas
Hodges’ sentence for Daryl
Brown was a win for the
defense, said Brown’s law
yer, Eugene Harper.
There never was any
doubt that Brown, 30, would
be convicted of the June
2, 2005, shooting of Sgt.
Tommy Williams, Harper
said. Instead, the defense
attorney focused on getting
a shorter sentence than the
one prosecutors had offered
for a plea bargain: 70 years,
he said.

Hodges sentenced Brown
after finding him guilty of
two counts of aggravated
assault on a police officer,
one count of aggravated bat
tery on a police officer, two
counts of criminal damage to
property and two counts of
possessing a firearm during
the commission of a crime.
If Hodges had made the
prison terms consecutive -
one beginning when another
expired - Brown’s overall
sentence would add up to
90 years. Instead, Hodges
made the sentences concur
rent, except for the firearm
charges, which by law can
not run concurrently.
Brown gave up his right to
a jury trial, instead opting to
allow a judge to decide guilt.
