Putting my best
foot forward
There I was on the first
Saturday of college
football season, nurs
ing an old football injury I
had reaggravated the night
before. I watched the ath
letes playing on their taped
ankles arid thought, “Yep, I
feel your pain.”
I first riiessed up my ankle
when I was in high school,
while tossing a football with a
friend. Out of our huge front
yard, I found the one hole
our dogs had dug that was
the perfect size for my right
foot. I
wrenched
my ankle
but good,
and had to
be carried
inside by
my friend,
who was a

that, so it wasn’t all bad.
From that time on, my
ankle has been an accident
waiting to happen. One sim
ple misstep, say while walk
ing down steps in high heels,
and I’m in pain again.
During college, I was tak
ing a required physical edu
cation class when I really
did a number on my ankle.
I found that racquetball and
a weak ankle do not a good
match make.
That time, my coach had
to carry hie to the infir
mary. He Was not a young,
good-lookirig football play
er. Rather, he was an older,
nearing retirement, slight
ly overweight coach, but I
didn’t care. The Hunchback
of Notre Dame could have
carried me, just so long as I
got some relief for my throb
bing foot.
The worst part of that
Researchers use fuel cells to
power unmanned vehicle
Special to the Journal
Georgia Institute of
Technology researchers
have conducted successful
test flights of a hydrogen
powered unmanned aircraft
believed to be the largest
to fly on a proton exchange
membrane fuel cell using
compressed hydrogen.
The fuel-cell system that
powers the 22-foot wingspan
aircraft geiierates only 500
watts.
“That raises a lot of
eyebrows,” said Adam
Broughton, a research engi
neer who is working on the
project in Georgia Tech’s
Aerospace Systems Design
Laboratory.
.“Five huhdred watts is
plenty of power for a light
bulb, but not for the propul
sion system of an aircraft
this size.”
In fact, 500 watts rep
resents about l/100th
the power of a hybrid car.
A collaboration between
ASDL and the Georgia Tech
Research Institute, the
project wafe spearheaded
by David Parekh, GTRI’s
deputy director and founder
of Georgia Tech’s Center
for Innovative Fuel Cell
and Battery Technologies.
Parekh wanted to develop
a vehicle that would both
advance fuel cell technol
ogy and galVanize industry
interest.
While the automotive
industry has made strides
with fuel cells, apart from
spacecraft, little has been
done to leverage fuel cell
technology for aerospace
applications, he noted.
“A fuel cell aircraft is more
compelling than just a lab
demonstration or even a
fuel cell system powering a
house,” Parekh explained.
“It’s also more demanding.
With an airplane, you really
push the limits for durabil
ity, robustness, power den
sity and efficiency.”
In November, the
researchers will present
details of the project at
the Society Of Automotive
Engineers’ Power System
Conference iri New Orleans.

mishap was that I had to get
around on crutches on the
campus of the University of
Georgia. Everything on cam
pus is uphill. If you actually
get to walk downhill at any
point, you know a bigger
uphill is coming. It was tir
ing, frustrating, painful, and
tear inducing. I remember
toiling along on my crutches,
bookbag on my back, when
a sympathetic, yet skinny
young man walked by. He
looked back at me and said,
“I’d carry you if I could!” Ah,
the heart of a true knight in
shining armor!
I have since twisted my
ankle several times. As I
said, I am good at finding a
hole in the ground anywhere,
anytime. I found a foot-sized
hole on the playground once
during my schoolteacher
years, and that’s what I did
the other night - found the
foot-sized hole in our front
yard with my right foot.
If 100 people were released
to find a million dollar check
hidden in a small hole in a
football field, I would quick
ly be a very rich person.
However, I would not be able
to enjoy the victory because
I would be on the ground
writhing in pain, having
found the hole and the check
with my right foot.
With a little extra care, my
ankle was about back to nor
mal by the end of the final
game on Saturday. Things
could have been worse than
having to sit back and watch
football, particularly watch
ing my Dawgs win, while
recuperating. By the time
church came on Sunday, I
didn’t look too gimpy as I
walked into the choir loft.
Besides, if anyone asked,
I could just say, “Oh, it’s
nothing but an old football
injury.”
convert hydrogen and oxy
gen into water, are attractive
as energy sources because
of their high energy density.
Higher energy density trans
lates into longer endurance.
Though fuel cells don’t
produce enough power for
the propulsion systems
of commercial passenger
aircraft, they could power
smaller, slower vehicles like
unmanned aerial vehicles
and provide a low cost alter
native to satellites.
Such UAVs could also
track hurricanes, patrol
borders and conduct gen
eral reconnaissance.
Fuel cell powered UAVs have
several advantages over con
ventional UAVs, noted Tom
Bradley, a doctoral student
in Georgia Tech’s School
of Mechanical Engineering
who developed the fuel cell
propulsion system.
For starters, fuel cells
emit no pollution and unlike
conventional UAVs, don’t
require separate generators
to produce electricity for
operating electronic compo
nents.
“Another plus, because fuel
cells operate at near ambi
ent temperatures, UAVs
emit less of a heat signa
ture and would be stealthier
than conventionally powered
UAVs,” he said.
