Houston County’s Nicole Williams gets ready to return a ball against Warner Robins during the county champi
onship Saturday at Warner Robins.
Lady Beans win county
volleyball championship
By MATTHEW BROWN
Journal Sports Writer
Three goals down, only one more
to go.
Houston County High School
claimed the 2006 county champion
ship of volleyball Saturday by going
4-0 against the county’s other three
public schools at Warner Robins High
School.
For head coach Tony Jones and
the Bears, it was the third of four
preseason goals met by the team.
The first was to win an area match,
the second was to secure a winning
season. With a current record of 22-5,
that is all but locked up.
The third was to win the county
championship tournament against
Warner Robins, Northside and Perry.
The Bears will have to wait another
month on the fourth goal, which is
making the state playoffs.
“This is big,” said Jones after sev
eral minutes of celebration with the
Houston County players and sup
porters. “Every girl on the floor came
up big, from the two who were called
up from the JV to the senior cap
tains. They all had their moments of
glory.”
Jones also recognized the fact that,
while Houston won the champion
ship final 2-0 against Warner Robins,
it was not an easy victory.
“Warner Robins was great,” he
said. “We played them four times
(last week), and they took it to us
each time. They have nothing to
hang their heads about.”

Bears and the Demonettes with three
matches under their belts since 8 in
the morning. Houston County won
the preliminary meetings against all
three other schools while Warner
Robins was victorious 2-0 against
Perry and Northside.
Warner Robins grabbed a 6-1 lead
in Game 1 with Katie Hotchkiss serv
ing an ace. Houston County rallied
for a 7-7 tie on kills in the middle by
Nicole Williams and Morgan Hollars
and an ace from Catherine Goodman.
It was the first of three in a row for
Goodman for a lead of 11-7.
The Demonettes would never go
completely away, winning points at
the net to pull within one. Hollars
served an ace only to see Catherine
Causey score a hard kill for the home
team (16-14). But as Devon Preston
served two more aces, Houston was
back in control at 19-14.
Though Deanna Drain had an ace
for Warner Robins late in the game,
a diving dig from Samantha Moncada
led to a point for the Bears that kept
the lead at five. The Demonettes
didn’t score again, and the 1-0 lead
went to Houston 25-17.
Game 2 was so dramatic that it
needed the volleyball version of over
time 'to decide it. That despite an
opening run of 6-0 for the Bears
with a sideline kill from Jennifer
Doebereiner and ace from Preston.
Warner Robins would close that gap
to two, 9-7, on two scores in the mid
dle from Tatianna Hill and another
ace for Drain.
Houston County stretched the
lead back to five, 13-8, only to have
Causey score a hard kill on a 4-0 run
by the hosts. With the score knotted
14-all, the Bears were plagued by
mistakes on Margarat Leon’s serve.
It was another 4-0 Demonette run to
go up 18-14.
The momentum, though, never
stayed on one side of the net for
long. Soon Houston got an ace from
Preston to trail by just one, 18-
17. Warner Robins pulled back even
again, 20-20, on a Causey kill. She
would serve four volleyballs in a
row Houston couldn’t return, leaving
Warner Robins one point away from
a third game.
The serve went back to the Bears
needing at least six points for the
championship. Goodman got two of
those on aces, and there was one
more tie 24-24. Williams was on serve
at match point, hit a long ace, and the
cup was on its way to Bear country.

Henderson's actions

Henderson didn’t embarrass

Thank God, the Bulldogs were

Had they been playing
Montana State, his gaff might
have cost mighty Georgia the

Instead of kicking Henderson
from one end of the field to the
