Georgia Tech quarterback Reggie Ball (1) is proving to be dual threat.
Ball proving a lethal dual-threat QB
By Adam Van Brimmer
Morris News Service
ATLANTA - Reggie Ball
understood early in life he
would not grow up to be a
large man.
He also knew he loved
playing football. Or more
precisely, he loved having
the football in his hands
making plays.
So long before Ball became
Georgia Tech’s diminutive
5-foot-11 quarterback, he
learned how to offset his
size limitations.
Playing schoolyard foot
ball with his brothers and
friends, he developed the
ability to avoid direct con
tact. He figured out how
to cushion his body against
blows.
Ball essentially became
the football equivalent of a
matador.
“I’m not the biggest guy
on the field, so I knew I had
to dodge some bulls here
and there,” Ball said.
All Ball is missing is a red
cape. He has taken few hard
hits over the last three-plus
years. He has started 39
of the 40 games Georgia
Tech has played during his
career, and his lone missed
start was due to a bout
with viral meningitis, not a
physical injury.
Offensive coordina
tor Patrick Nix is calling
Ball’s number frequently
as a result. The quarter

in rushing in two of its
three games, averaging 65
yards. He carried 16 times
for 130 yards - the most
yardage by a quarterback in
Georgia Tech history - last
Saturday against Troy.
Head coach Chan Gailey
has no qualms about sub
jecting his veteran quarter
back to injury by running
him more than a dozen
times a game. Ball is as
tough a runner as he is
elusive.
“It’s not like he’s a wimpy
quarterback,” Gailey said.
“He’s a physical guy play
ing the position. That’s the
thing he gives you, that
added dimension. So you
use it.”
Georgia Tech’s new
offense, implemented by
Nix in the offseason, is
based largely around Ball’s
skills. The scheme utilizes
multiple receivers, which
spreads out the defense.
That gives Ball the option
to throw, run or hand off
based on what he reads
from the defense at the
snap. He can bootleg and
run, roll out and throw, or
run the option.
Troy witnessed Ball’s
potential as a dual-threat.
Georgia Tech opened the
game throwing.
OnCe the Trojans put
their focus on stopping the
pass, Ball ran the ball. And

Choice ran 10 times for

of the 35-20 victory.
“He’s making good deci

“He’s running the huddle
well. He’s a veteran, and
he’s playing like one.”
Ball’s talent as a run
ner impresses teammates.
Georgia Tech’s fullback,
Mike Cox, said Ball might
have a pro career at a posi
tion other than quarter
back.
“I think he could make it
as a running back because he
has good vision,” Cox said.
“He is very fast, extremely
strong and he will not run
