Rimando appointed to advisory council

Joseph Rimando, a senior
at Warner Robins High
School was among those
appointed to the 2006-07
Student Advisory Council,
as appointed Thursday by
State Superintendent of
Schools Kathy Cox.
“This is a great group of
Btudents,” Cox said. “These
students come from all over
the state and can each bring
a unique perspective to the
group.”
The superintendent began
the council in 2003, when she

Houston County is help
ing pay for operation of its
public safety radio system by
letting more agencies in.
The Fort Valley State
University Campus Police
from Peach County is the
latest agency to join Houston
County’s 800 MHz radio
emergency/911 radio sys
tem.
Peach County fire and
sheriffs departments are
already on the Houston
County system with the
same fees and Peach County
has built an 800 MHz tower
in Fort Valley.
“It produces some revenue
for us with no adverse affects
on the public safety cover
age in Houston County,”
said Commissioner Tom
McMichael.
How much revenue?
The FVSU campus Police
are buying 15 radios and
will have to pay Houston
County a one-time $75 per
radio programming fee for a
total of $1,125 plus another
S3O a month user fee per
radio. That’s another $450
a month.
Houston County paid the
$12.5 million cost of the
changeover to the system
with part of the 2001 special
purpose local option sales
tax. It was one of the county

ing to a release, the boosters
have invited bands from all
over the southeastern part
of the United States to com
pete against one another.

of Education will hold its
monthly meeting Tuesday at
1 p.m. at the board’s central
office building in Perry.
■ WORK SESSION - The
Warner Robins City Council
work session is scheduled
for Oct. 12 at 4 p.m. in the
upstairs conference room,
Warner Robins City Hall,
800 Watson Blvd.
■ MEETING - The
Warner Robins City Council
will meet Oct. 16 at 6:30
p.m. in the council chamber,
Warner Robins City Hall,
800 Watson Blvd. A prelimi
nary meeting is scheduled
for 5 p.m. in the upstairs
conference room.

a school council meeting Oct.

Sacred Heart Fall Festival

Heart Church, 250 South
Davis Drive, Warner Robins.
Parking will be available at
the church, Robins Federal

State College - Warner
Robins Campus. Country
music star T. Graham Brown
will hold a free concert alog
with concerts by Josh Graf &
Company and the Buttercats.
Various rides and games will
also be at the festival.

members - all high school
students - also serve as
ambassadors for the Georgia
Department of Education in
their schools.
There are 52 members of
the council, each from a dif
ferent school district in the
state.
They were chosen through
an application process that
included biographical infor
mation and essay questions.
There were 640 applications
submitted from 120 different
wide projects of the 2001
SPLOST.
In other business during
the council’s meeting this
week, the county finally
received its fiscal year 2005
Local Law Enforcement
Block Grant. The grant
for $9,388 plus the county
matching portion of $1,043

school districts around the
state. The council members
were chosen by a panel from
the Georgia Department of
Education.
“There were so many great
applications that I know the
final decision was very diffi
cult for the panel,” Cox said.
“I want to say ‘thank you’ to
every student who took the
time to apply and hope that,
if possible, they will apply
again next year.”
The first meeting of the
council will be held Oct. 16 at
Mercer University in Macon.
The council will meet three
more times during the year.

Chief Deputy Billy Rape
said the grant, held up in
paperwork, “will help us buy
equipment. If something
outside the budget comes up
the sheriff can use it to buy
equipment,” he said.
