Ga. man charged
with incest
ATHENS (MNS) - An
Athens man allegedly had
sex with his 12-year-old
daughter for as long as two
years before Athens-Clarke
police arrested him this
week on incest charges.
Officers learned of the
alleged incest on Tuesday,
when the girl’s • relatives
called to complain of inap
propriate contact between
the 33-year-old father and
his daughter, according to
police.
“I’m not sure how they
found out, but they had
some indication something
was taking place,” Athens-
Clarke police Lt. Greg Paul
said.
The girl’s mother didn’t
know that her ex-husband
was having sex with their
daughter until a detective
questioned the alleged vic
tim, he said.
“For the victim’s sake, we
didn’t pry out too much, said
Paul, who heads the Criminal
Investigations Division’s
domestic violence and sex
crimes units. “Sometimes
the emotional distress is
too involved to be able to
determine what happened,
but through interviews, we
learned enough about what
was done to make the arrest
based on her statements.”
In sexual assault cases,
Morris News Service does
, not name the suspect if that
information would reveal
the victim’s identity.
The girl’s father was
charged with three counts of
incest, and one count each of
statutory rape, child moles
tation and electronically fur
nishing obscene material to
minors, police said.
Mom found guilty

her children. On Thursday,
she lost her freedom.

The guilty verdicts on both

for her.
Although she could have
received 10 years in prison,
the judge concluded there
were mitigating circum
stances that affected the
sentence, including men
tal health issues and the
fact that her negligence -
although criminal - was not
intentional.
He also noted Payne must
endure the loss of her chil

District Attorney Dennis
Sanders called 17 witness

establish that Payne repeat

toddlers and left them unat

despite warnings from neigh

Attacks begin the governor's race
ATLANTA <AP) - Let the
mudslinging begin. With one
month left to go before the
Nov. 7 general election, the
attacks have begun in the
race for governor.
On Friday, Lt. Gov.
Mark Taylor and the state
Democratic Party ‘put U P
their first television ad tak
ing explicit aim at Republican
Gov. Sonny Perdue. The spot
accuses Perdue of using his
office to get rich, citing his
purchase . of Florida land
near Disney World from a
wealthy GOP developer and
donor.
“Using the Georgia gover
nor’s office to make himself
rich in Florida. That’s what
Sonny did,” the ad says.
The TV ad comes just after
a mailer by Perdue, in which
he lambasted Taylor for put
ting “the interests of the
radical homosexual lobby
ahead of our Boy Scouts.”
The mailer, first reported
in the Atlanta Journal-
Constitution, asserts that
Taylor took a $5,000 donation
from a group that promotes
late-term abortions and has
SATURDAY, OCTOBER 7, 2006
been endorsed by “radical
liberal figures” like U.S. Rep.
Cynthia McKinney.
The Perdue mailer arrived
in mailboxes just days after
Perdue began running a
television advertisement
saying he hoped the race
for governor would be free
from attack ads. In that ad,
Perdue appears with his wife
Mary and the family dog,
Lucy.
