Bush stumps for former
congressman’s election bid
By SHANNON
McCaffrey
Associated Press Writer
MACON (AP) -President
Bush urged Republicans
to give former U.S. Rep.
Mac Collins a return trip
to Capitol Hill, saying that
if Democrats regain control
of Congress there will be
a retreat on bedrock GOP
issues of national security
and tax cuts.
“I look forward to working
with this good man to help
protect you from the threats
that we face,” Bush told
about 500 Republican faith
ful gathered at the Macon
Centreplex and Coliseum.
Bush added that “if you
want to keep the tax cuts we
passed, vote Republican on
November the 7th.”
Bush touched down in cen
tral Georgia Tuesday after
noon to help Collins stock
his campaign warchest for
the homestretch of his bid to
oust Democratic incumbent
Rep. Jim Marshall.
It was expected the
event would raise at least
$300,000.
Outside on Tuesday about
150 protesters gathered. A
couple dozen carried pro-
Bush signs and American
flags. Some others opposed
the war.
“Friends, this debate is
about who is going to control
the House of Representatives
in the next Congress,”
Collins told donors who had
gathered to hear Bush.
“We are,” shouted a sup
porter from the crowd.
Bush’s quick trip to the
region on Tuesday under
scored just how the high
stakes are in the November
midterm elections.
Democrats are fighting
hard to regain control of the
House.
They are being fueled by
displeasure over the war in

Marshall, a two-term con
servative Democrat recently
inducted into the U.S. Army
Ranger Hall of Fame, enjoys
support in the district’s large
military community and has
crossover appeal to moder
ate conservatives.
Collins gave up his for
mer seat for an unsuccessful
Senate bid in 2004.
Since then, the district
has been redrawn by the
Republican-controlled
Georgia Legislature so that
portions are now new to
both candidates.
Elsewhere in the coun
try Democrats are look
ing to unseat vulnerable
Republicans.
In Georgia, Collins and
another ex-GOP congress
man, Max Burns, are pos
ing strong challenges to
Democratic incumbents.
Last month, Bush stumped
for Burns, near Savannah.
That trip raised about
$385,000 for Burns’ 12th
District campaign against
incumbent Democrat John
Barrow.
