Ikebana Mid-Georgia
chapter to meet
The Ikebana International Middle
Georgia Chapter 112 will meet
Wednesday at 10 a.m. at the Flint
EMV building on Elberta Road.
The meeting this month will
feature Jackie Noll, of the Misho
School of Ikebana, who will conduct
a demonstration and workshop using
pampass grass. Anyone interested
in learning more about Ikebana is
invited to attend. Note: The club
provides supplies for visitors.

Business to hold
Women’s Workshop
American Lube Fast will hold its
inaugural Women's Workshop Nov.
5 from noon-4 p.m.
The workshop will be held at the
American Lube Fast location at 757
Highway 96 East in Bonaire. The
workshop, according to a release,
will provide “essential and valuable
car maintenance and safety tips.”
It will include three interactive
learning stations that provide infor
mation on how to check your oil, how
to check tire pressure, how to change
a tire and more. American Lube Fast,
according to the release, will be
providing free food and beverages. A
drawing will be held for a grand prize
package including oil changes for a
year and a spa package.
A children’s play area will be
provided. The event is free and open
to the public.

Police arrest robbery suspect

Journal Staff Writer
Houston County Sheriff’s Office had
a suspect in custody about two and
half hours following an armed robbery
Wednesday.
Frederick Maurice Marshall, 26, of
Perry, was arrested for the armed rob
bery of the Holiday Food Mart, which
is located at 1130 North Houston

Grant to add jobs, make Perry plant flagship

The Houston County Development
Authority, which met Wednesday, is
applying for a state grant to help with
the Perdue Farms expansion.
The Economic Development, Growth
and Expansion grant for Perdue is
the latest in funding assistance the
Authority is giving to Perdue. About
$155 million in revenue bonds have
been approved so far for the expan
sion of the chicken processing facility,
which will add another 1,000 jobs by
the time the expansion is complete

According to the
Sheriff’s Office,
Marshall entered

10:35 a.m. and left
on foot with an unde
termined amount of
cash
With the assistance
of the Centerville
Police Department and tracking
(2012 for the complete expansion;
2009 for the jobs to be established)
and make the Perry plant Perdue’s
flagship.
About $lO million of the bonds to
be paid back by Perdue Farms is for
the cost of planning, design, acquisi
tion, construction, installation and
equipping of improvements to existing
wastewater treatment facilities at the
plant at 250 Ga. 247 Spur in Perry.
According to the resolution in sup
port of the grant application: It is the
intention of the Authority to devel
opment economic opportunities for
dogs from the Central Correctional
Institute the immediate area was sur
rounded as a ground search was con
ducted.
Deputy James Spivey reportedly
spotted Marshall exiting a wooded
area on Dunbar road at U.S. 41 at
about 1:10 p.m.
He was then reportedly arrested
without incident.

tation of a lottery selec
tion process for Pre-
Kindergarten enrollment.
In the past children have
been enrolled on a first
come, first-serve basis for
the state-allotted number
of openings.
For the 2007-2008
school year, parents will
have a full month to reg
ister their Pre-K children
which will then qualify

“We’ve got our hands full
with lots of tough candi
dates out there,” said Jack
O’Davis.
O’Davis, a former candi
date for state Senate against
Sonny Perdue and Warner
Robins City Council served
as moderator for a candidate
forum Tuesday night spon
sored by the Delta Sigma
Theta Alumnae Chapter.
The forum, O’Davis said
during opening prayer, was
“to get together and feel out
these candidates.”
There were the seven non
partisan candidates for the
three school district seats
up for election in November
- Districts 2, 4 and 6 - and
the Democrat challenger
and incumbent Republican
for District 2 seat on the
County Commission.
Candidates were given a
three-minute opening and
two-minute closing state
ment to open and close the
forum. Some of the ques
tions came from the 60 or so
in attendance for the event.
In the County Commission
District 2 race, incumbent
Jay Walker faces challenger
Maurice Braswell.
In the District 2 School
Board race Kathy Brown
and Marianne Melnick are
running for the seat cur
rently held by the retiring
Jim Boswell.
In the District 4 School
Board race, incumbent Fred
Wilson faces challenger John
Gelreich, the 2004 STAR
teacher at Northside High.
In the District 6 race incum
bent Griff Clements faces
challengers Bob Swecker, a
concerned parent, and Jehad
Yasmin, an economics pro
fessor at Fort Valley State
University.
Brown, an active parent,
said she was running for
the children of the district.
“Without education our
homes and businesses will
dry up and go away.”
Melnick, a former school
system administrator said
she would advocate that
all policies be in the best
interest of all the students.
