Mossy Creek time approaching again
By CHARLOTTE
PERKINS
Journal Lifestyle Editor
The Mossy Creek Barnyard
Festival is coming soon, with
plenty of the old favorite
attractions that have kept
it going for a quarter of a
century, and some new faces,
too.
There’ll be Craftsmen and
artists from around the
country - over 150 from
24 states this time, includ
ing longtime local favorites.
Ernie Mills, whose hand
carved working decoys are in
the Smithsonian Museum,
will be back, demonstrating
his craft. Trudie Bartkus
will be at the festival with
her corn shuck dolls, and
there’ll be every kind of live
music from honky-tonk to
Hillbilly to Celtic.
This year, festival-goers
can meet Ron Gladkowski,
a stained glass artist in the
Tiffany tradition; Lynda
French, a wild-flower and
bird artist, and Victoria
Rumble, the author of two
books on 19th Century
America who cooks on an
open hearth, offering sam
ples to all.
Other newcomers will

It may be interesting to
you and even completely
unbelievable to learn that
I am an incredibly sought
after single woman. Many

I’m beginning to think
that I could sell myself for a
small fortune as a mail order
bride. Of course, it isn’t the
guys who are trying to get
me.
It’s their mamas.
But can you blame
any God-fearing, decent
Southern mama for wanting
a good Southern girl for her
boy? What Southern mama
wouldn’t want a woman
who can bake up a batch of
homemade biscuits, hem a
pair of pants, knit a sweater
or clean out gutters if the
need arises?
Now, the sons are prob
ably looking for something
different, things that would
make their mamas blush.
Mamas, though, are think
ing of what it would take to
nurture and comfort their
baby boys just as they have
done over the years.
That’s why in the eyes of
so many mamas, I’m the
girl.
For the past few years,
mail has poured in from
maternal ones who pleaded
their case.
“I am sure that you get
dozens and dozens of inqui
ries like this,” one mama
wrote. “And, to be honest,
I am probably wasting my
time but I had to try. My

Just what is vaseline
glass anyway? No,
it isn’t made out of
Vaseline!
It actually contains
Uranium! This week we
are going to talk about this
amazing type of glassware
that has was a favorite of the
Victorian era.
You can see some beauti
ful examples of this type of
glass at the Georgia National
Fair in the Antiques sec
tion located in the Miller-
Murphy-Howard building.
In 1789 a poor German
druggist named Martin
Klaproth discovered how
to extract uranium dioxide
from pitchblend, a common
ore. Uranium dioxide is what
gives the glassware its yel
low color and the makes the
glass “glow”. Do not confuse
Vaseline glass with amber
or yellow depression glass.
The way to tell if a piece of
glassware is Vaseline glass
is to place it under a black
light. The high energy emis
sions of electrons from the
black light excite the urani
um oxide particles and cause

You never know when the

Another mother who
wrote, was more blunt. “My
son is a doctor and does
quite well for himself. But
he dates the wrong kind of
women. Big boobs, blonde
hair and not a brain in their
heads. It is obvious to me
that they are only after
his money. I want him to
have someone more like me.
Plain, simple, hard-working.
Nothing fancy. You’d be per
fect.”
I loved .the one from the
mama who was able to see
past all her son’s outstand
ing qualities, which she
listed in two paragraphs,
and point out his flaws. I’ve
never seen a boy’s mama
do that. Usually sons can
do no wrong where Mama’s
concerned.
“Now, I’ve told you all the
good stuff, I’ll tell you the
rest,” she wrote. “He’s not

stores that have a Vaseline

added benefit of the black
light is that you can clearly
see any
flaws,
cracks or
repairs as
well.

had actually already been
in existence for 100 years
at that time and had been
known as “Canary Glass”
or “Uranium Glass”. The
glass was similar to the color
of petroleum jelly (Vaseline)
at that time. Apparently it
wasn’t as clear back then as
it is today!
The glass press was
invented in America in 1827

Unfortunately, he inherited
his father’s nose. Big, ugly
noses run on that side of
the family. It’s a shame he
couldn’t have gotten his nose
from my side because we all
have very nice-shaped noses.
Still, he works out regularly
and is in good shape. He
has a kind heart, a strong
work ethic and a brand new
Corvette. If you can overlook
the nose, I think you’d be
pleased.”
Without exception, all the
women apologize for such
boldness but I am never
offended. I’m always delight
ed to read these emails and
cards.
“You must be flattered to
see how much these mamas
think of you,” one friend
commented.
“I think it’s more des
peration than flattery,” I
responded dryly.
Mv all-time favorite pitch,
though, didn’t come from a
mama. It came from a dad,
who waited in a book-sign
ing line to talk to me.
“I guess folks are always
trying to fix you up,” he
began. I smiled and nodded.
“Well, I got me a boy that’s
good-looking and awfully
charming.” He leaned closer.
“But if anyone ever tries to
fix you up with him, run as
fast as you can.” He shook
his head. “That boy ain’t
worth a durn.”
Now, that’s a first. Usually,
I have to find that out for
myself.

ly took off. The Victorians
really loved this glowing
sparkly glass.
Remember, this was at the
time before most homes had
electricity and the sunrise,
sunsets, and oil lamp light
really made this glass look,
nice in those somber dark
homes. Our eyes perceive
the yellow green color wave
length first in those light
ing situations so you can
see why it was so popular.
Unfortunately, it was the
electric light that began the
demise of the popularity of
Vaseline glass. Artificial
light flattens the color mak
ing it look just yellow or
yellow-green. Some glass
companies added a little iron
to their uranium dioxide in
the 20’s and 30’s to get that
yellow-green color.
