BANQUET

and pork barbeque meal from
Sonny’s, a silent auction, and
raffle for numerous outdoor
items and merchandise.
Funds raised during the
event will be split on a 75/25
basis with the state wide
GON organization. Locally,
Trussell says the local com
mittee will decide how the
funds will be spent, but
preliminary plans are being
developed.
Last year the committee
set up a “Harvest Share” pro
gram where hunters donated
deer that were processed by
Troy Windham at Aartistik
Taxidermy in Centerville.
The venison was given to the
community outreach center
on Duke Avenue in Warner
Robins to feed the homeless
of Houston County. This pro
gram will be continued if suf
ficient funds are raised.
Also began last year was
the “Fishing, check it out!”
program at the Houston
County Library system.
Linder this program, any
individual with a library card
can check out a Zebco 33 rod
and reel, just like a book.
At this year’s banquet,
attendees will hear Jennifer
Bailey, an educational coor
dinator with the Georgia
Department of Natural
Resources talk about the
“Archery in the Schools” pro
gram.
This voluntary, two week
middle school program allows
kids to shoot lightweight 10-
20 pound pull bows in an
indoor setting.
Targets are only a few feet
away with a kelvar backstop.
The program is running in
40 states, including several
counties in Georgia.
If the local committee
approves of this program,
it may be presented to the
Houston County School
Board for their consider
ation.
Another major goal of the
GON banquet committee is
to promote the continued
existence of Oaky Woods
and Ocmulgee Wildlife
Management Areas which
are threatened by residential
development and ballooning
land prices.
Oaky Woods has already
been sold but Trussell and
the banquet committee
hope to convince Gov. Sonny
Perdue and the state officials
to purchase the property to
preserve valuable and irre
placeable green space adja
cent to the rapidly expanding
population of Warner Robins
and Houston County. Kevin
Kramer, DNR Region wildlife
biologist will update the ban
quet attendees on the pre
liminary results on the bear
study on Oaky Woods WMA.
Also do not miss Les Ager,
our region fisheries biolo
gist for the DNR, give an
update on the progress being
made at the new Flat Creek
