Family sues store
where father shot
SAVANNAH (AP) - A
Savannah convenience store
plagued by crime is being
sued by the family of a man
shot and killed there two
years ago.
Attorney Thomas Taggart,
on behalf of the two young
sons of Antonio Spurgeon,
filed a suit last month in
Chatham County Superior
Court claiming that the
owners of the store formerly
called Time Saver did not
take steps to keep the prop
erty safe. The store has since
changed hands and names,
and the new owners say they
have improved the safety
of the property. This is the
second suit that Taggart
has filed against the Time
Saver for crimes that hap
pened there. The first was
in 2002 when he represented
the family of Ross Robinson,
a Hilton Head, S.C., artist
shot and killed trying to buy
a pack of cigarettes.
Police have been called to
the store 649 times since
August 2001, mostly for dis
orderly conduct, according
to dispatch records.

Major Southeastern farm
show highlights technology
By ELLIOTT MINOR
AP Farm Writer
ALBANY - The 29th
annual Sunbelt Agricultural
Exposition, billed as the
world’s largest farm show
with field demonstrations,
opens Tuesday with 1,200
exhibits highlighting labor
saving technology as well as
leisure products to enhance
rural life.
“Our mission is agricul
ture,” said Chip Blalock,
executive director of the
three-day show at Spence
Field near Moultrie. “But
we do have something for
the entire family.... It’s also
a good time for consumers
of agricultural products to
come and see what the farm
er is doing to produce the
most economical, safest and
abundant supply of food ...
in the world.”
Open from Tuesday to
Thursday, the show is
expected to attract about
200,000 visitors, including a
few politicians.
Gov. Sonny Perdue, who is
campaigning for re-election,
will visit the show Tuesday,
and the agriculture commis
sioners of Georgia, Alabama
and Florida will take time
out of their re-election cam
paigns to compete in a milk
ing contest.
“We’re trying to revital-

ize our dairy section and
thought that would be a
good, fun event that would
also would create awareness
for the dairy industry and
the food products they pro
vide, most notably milk,”
said Blalock.
Sunbelt’s 100-acre exhibit
area will be filled with dis
plays of all-terrain vehicles,
lawn and garden products,
hunting and fishing equip
ment and the latest cars and
trucks. The Expo also has a
working farm with 600 acres
of cotton, corn, peanuts,
hay and grain sorghum.
Companies show off their
latest tractors and harvest
ing equipment on the farm
during the show. New this
year will be tractors pow
ered by biodiesel fuel made
from peanuts - a response
to high fuel prices and the
need for alternative energy
sources. Sunbelt has fea
tured self-steering tractors
with satellite guidance sys
tems for several years, but
the ones demonstrated this
year incorporate the latest
advances in the technology,
Blalock said.
