work around a slew of errors

One run scored on a
Hannah Billingsly hit.
Mason Moreland, the most
reliable fielder all day at sec

on the next two batters to
retire the side.
Still 4-1 in the top of the
fourth, Moreland bunted
her way on base to lead
off and took second on
Daryl Ann Thompson’s sac

Moreland.
With the bases empty,
Clearman singled and scored
on Wrye’s third RBI of the
game.
Wrye, the catcher, threw
out a basestealer to end
First Presbyterian’s second
inning. Sydney Smith, from
left field, got an assist to sec
ond base on a fourth-inning
hit. Even with an error start
ing off FPD’s sixth, there
was a heads-up double play
from Gilliam to Clearman at
first base to Jones covering
second base.
Billingsly hit a leadoff home
run in the fourth inning (6-
2). With two outs and one on
in the seventh, the Vikings
had three straight hits to
cut the lead down to 6-4.
Jamie Marshall, in center
field, hauled in a hard-hit
ball for the final out and the
championship.

batting first Maddox got
touched up for two runs on
two hits and some daredevil
baserunning by Clearman.
Moreland led off with a hit
and tagged up on a deep fly
ball to left with one out. With
an error on the relay throw,
Moreland reached third base.
The Vikings chose to walk
Clearman intentionally, but
Clearman didn’t stop at first
base. That drew another bad
throw allowing Moreland to
score.
Clearman scored on a flare
from Jones for the 2-0 lead.
Morgan Johnson’s lead
off home run got First
Presbyterian on the board in
the home first. Johnson also
led off the home third with
a triple and scored the tying
run on a groundout.
Westfield still couldn’t
keep leadoff batters off base
as Billingsly started the
fourth on a hit. She was
unable to score from second
on a double as Jones took
the throw from the outfield
and got a strike to Wrye for
the out. Clearman couldn’t
hold first base on Jones’
throw that would have been
the third out, but fired the
ball to Wrye for another suc
cessful play at the plate.
FPD would use its outs
wisely in the fifth scoring
the go-ahead run, 3-2, on
one hit.
Maddox was rolling with 12
outs in a span of 13 batters
going into the sixth. Gilliam
broke that string with a one
out hit and advanced on a
wild pitch. After a Clearman
single, Gilliam tried to score
on a wild pitch. The out
was there, but the catcher
dropped the ball.
The inning continued
with two outs, and with

HORNETS 11. TROJANS 10 (eliml
nation)
The game that showed
this might be Westfield’s day
started with the first Hornet
lead in regulation innings.
The home-team Hornets
jumped on Tattnall Square
for three runs on four hits in
the first inning. Three of the
hits and all of the runs came
with two outs.
With Moreland on base,
Clearman beat out a bunt
with two outs to earn an
RBI. Jones tripled to right
and scored on a Wrye sin
gle,
Westfield left the bases
loaded in the second. Tattnall
Square, getting its first hits
off Gilliam, tied the game in
the top of the third. Again,
all runs came with two outs
as Logan Smith’s line drive
ended the shutout. No one
caught a pop-up that fell
fair and plated a run. The
Trojans would tie it on the
fifth hit of the frame, but
Marshall ended it with an
assist at the plate.
The Hornets had another
bases-loaded deal go to waste
the home half. Thompson
was left on base after a lead
off double to the fence in the
fourth. Westfield would not
waste a leadoff walk in the
fifth to go up 4-3 as Smith
got down the sacrifice and
the run came in on an error.
Tattnall Square also left
runners stranded on third,
Jones helping out with a
great play to end the top
of the sixth. Thompson,
though, had her second
