Lady Bears secure at least No. 2 seed
Special to the Journal
Relax coach, they’ve got it all
under control. Such might have been
the advice for Houston County head
volleyball coach Tony Jones.
His squad traveled to Union Grove
Friday and Saturday to compete in
the Area tournament.
In the end, the Lady Bears Fin
ished 4-1, qualified for the state
tournament and earned a right to
play the host for Area champion and
the state’s No. 1 seed.
That match was to take place
Tuesday at Union Grove (results
pending).

in Perry. Gibbs won the overall title for women. For more, see Thursday’s Houston

this past weekend was: No. 1 Union
Grove, No. 2 Houston County, No. 3
Morrow, No. 4 Luella, No. 5 Warner
Robins, No. 6 Mundy’s Mill, No. 7
M.L. King and No. 8 Redan.
Lithonia and Stephenson, Jones
said, chose not to participate.
The Lady Bears’ seeding put them
against M.L. King. Easy enough.
Houston County beat them in two
games and by the identical score of
25-20.
“I was a little concerned about the
match up with MLK,” Jones said
leading up the match, “as they felt
we got by them on a technicality,
Houston County, Coffee County, Tift
County, Colquitt County, Valdosta and
Lowndes. The last - the Vikings - were
the only no-show. Erpelding added he
expected the time saving to be more
like three to four hours for a bigger
meet. In other words: The software
was a success.
The same could be said for Warner
Robins boys. The Demons finished first
overall.
Their score was 54. Tift County

and they felt they could beat us.” He
explained the “technicality” by say
ing MLK was late by two hours for
their Area match at Houston County
and the first game was forfeited.
However, Jones added: “Our girls
played well and dominated in all the
areas of the match.”
The win set up a second round
matchup with Morrow. The two were
no strangers having split during the
regular season, and this is where the
“under control” part at least begins.
The Lady Bears lost two games to
one, with, he said, identical scores

Albany on Friday, the
Hornets will swarm
around Deerfield-

game that could well keep
only one team’s playoff
hopes alive in the south

Last weekend, Westfield
dropped to 0-2 in the
region while Deerfield-
Windsor snapped a four
game losing streak and
won for the first time
in league play 48-0 over
Sherwood Christian.
The 3-4 Knights stand

leapfrog over them with a
victory and remain in the
playoff hunt with three
more games to go.
