► Five of the top six Charlotte
finishers were in the Chase, in
cluding the top four. Chase driv
ers have won three of the five
races since it started.
» Six of Kasey Kahne's seven ca
reer victories have occurred this
year. His first victory was on a
short track, but all six this year
have occurred on so-called inter
mediate tracks.
► The same driver has swept
both races at Lowe’s Motor
Speedway three years in a row.
Jimmie Johnson did it in 2004-
05 and finished second in both
this year.
► Kahne has six of Dodge’s sev
en victories this year. Kurt
Busch notched the other.
► It's not too late for Jeff Gor
don, but it might be if he does
n't do well at Martinsville, where
he won both races in 2005 and
finished second to Tony Stewart
in the first race at the track this
year.
► In case you missed it. Bobby
Labonte, who finished fifth at
LMS, has finished in the top 10
in three of the past four races.
► Four of the drivers now in the
Chase Matt Kenseth, Jeff
Burton, Kahne and Denny Ham
lin finished 24th or worse in
the first Martinsville race.
► Kahne picked up 88 points on
leader Jeff Burton at Talladega,
and his LMS victory enabled
him to gain another 25, even
though Burton finished third.
Kahne led the most laps, and
Burton didn't lead any.
► Burton's the points leader, but
he’s far down the list in money
winnings. Jimmie Johnson, who
won both the Daytona 500 and
the Allstate 400 at the Brick
yard, has totaled $7,769,138.
Eight others, including Casey
Mears, have also earned more
than Burton's total of
$4,472,347.
► Twice this year Carl Edwards
has been wrecked while leading
a Busch Series race in the final
laps. The latest incident, involv
ing Mears, led to Dave Blaney’s
upset victory in the Dollar Gen
eral 300 at LMS.

Kahne’s win means shuffle in The Chase - at the bottom
By Monte Dutton
NASCAR This Week
The Chase is halfway over, and per
haps it’s time we looked for dis
cernible patterns in the mystery con
cerning just who will be the Nextel
Cup champion.
At the top are two seasoned veter
ans, Jeff Burton and former champion
Matt Kenseth. Next is the driver,
Kevin Harvick, who has already
clinched the Busch Series title and is
bidding to become the first driver to
win both championships in the same
year.
It really does change week to week.
The results at the Bank of America
500 at Lowe’s Motor Speedway pro
duced changes in eight of the 10 posi
tions. Burton, however, has been the
leader four weeks in a row.
What’s notable? The upward move
ment is coming from the bottom. The

HOUSTON COUNTY
PROBATE COURT
Robert Allen Montgomery
has petitioned to be appointed Ad
ministrator of the estate of Paul
Leon Montgomery, deceased, of
said County. The petitioner has also
applied for waiver of bond and/or
grant of certain powers contained in
Bank of America 500 at Lowe's
Motor Speedway, his sixth win of
the season. He completed a sweep
at LMS. Kahne was coming off a
runner-up finish at Talladega. He’s
the hottest driver in NASCAR once
again. This time fate conspired
against none of the Chase’s early
underachievers. Kahne won, and
both runner-up Jimmie Johnson
and Kyle Busch (sixth) finished in
the top 10. Jeff Gordon's woes
continued. Mark Martin's began.
After a final pit stop on lap 303,
Johnson, who had won five of the
previous seven races at LMS, took
the lead by pitting for fuel only. It
took Kahne, whose Dodge also opt
ed not to change tires, only two
laps to roar past Johnson on the
outside. His margin at the check
ered flag was 1.624 seconds.
fN THE Sf=»OTt-l<3riHT
Halfway Through The Chase
Kasey Kahne, are presently seventh
and eighth. Johnson, who has proved
he could rally before, trails Burton by
146 points. Kahne, the leader in victo
ries this year with six, is 160 back.
Johnson took a hit at Talladega on
Oct. 8, when he was hit from behind
while trying to take the lead on the fi
nal lap, but he rebounded to finish
second at Lowe’s Motor Speedway.
Kahne finished second at Talladega,
picking up 88 points on Burton, and
won at LMS, chipping 25 more away.
It’s just halfway. As they try to beat
the odds, Johnson and Kahne can take
some comfort in the reality that they
are performing well. They have cars
that can reliably be depended on to at
least compete for the checkered flag.
Fate may intervene and already has
but the potential is there.
Of Burton, Kahne observed, “He
ran another great race. If he keeps
running great races, you’re not going
to be able to catch him.”

When this Chase began, the notion,
often cited, was that each driver
could withstand one bad race. The
popular term in the garage is “mulli
gan." Kahne has taken three of them,
and yet his hopes remain alive. Even
Burton has taken one. This champi
onship fight has featured more
knockdowns than most would have
imagined.
“Whatever team it happens to be, if

Jimmie’s or Kasey’s or a few others’.

bad-luck race than Jimmie and Kasey

Martin
Mark Martin
vs. JJ. Yeley
Martin took a devastating hit in
the Chase standings on lap 242 of
the Bank of America 500. His Ford
slammed into the back of Yeley's
Chevy, which had slowed suddenly to
go down pit road. Yeley didn’t think he
did anything wrong. Martin said,"...
from my viewpoint, he let the 'l7'
(Matt Kenseth) pass him on the in
side, and I was coming, too, and I did
n't know he was going to pit... and
he was up in the middle of the track.”
NASCAR This Week's Monte
Dutton gives his take: “It's a good
example of how a relatively simple
misunderstanding can have a rela
tively complex effect on the Chase.”
Nemechek travels to
Guantanamo after race
Following the running of the Bank
of America 500, driver Joe Nemechek
was off to visit the naval base at
Guantanamo Bay.Nemechek, whose
NASCAR sponsor is the Army, visited
the installation on a trip sponsored
by Goodyear. He was accompanied by
his mother, Martha.
“One thing I learned driving the
Army car is that the troops, no matter
where they’re stationed, follow
NASCAR," said Nemechek. “In many
countries, they’re up in the middle of
the night watching the race."
Guantanamo Bay is on the south
eastern side of Cuba and has been
the site of an American base since
shortly after the end of the Spanish-
American War. It is currently a deten
tion site for enemy combatants.

Gordon overlooked?
Give me a break ...
Your comment (in "Burning Is

true. He is not overlooked. All I ever
read about is this brat racer who
cries and whines after every race he
doesn't win. I highly doubt he is the
greatest driver in history. He does not
compare to all the past winners who
were not whiners. ...
