ALABAMA —Established in
1818, Maple Hill Cemetery in
Huntsville is one of the states old
est and largest cemeteries. With
nearly 100 acres, the cemetery is
a popular walking and picnicking
spot with hundreds of dogwoods
and other blooming trees and un
usual carved monuments.
The W.C. Handy Birthplace,
Museum and Librarv in Florence
(pop. 36,264) honors the life of
the Father of the Blues,” bom
on New. 16, 187.3, and includes
his personal papers, the piano on
which he composed Sumt Louis
Bints and his trumpet.
ARKANSAS —Mayhaw jeilv
is a regional favorite, made from
tlie tart fruit of mayliaw trees,
which grow in streams, river
bottoms and swamplands of the
South. El Dorado (pop. 21,530)
and Colquitt, Ga., which pro
claims itself the mayhaw capital
of the world, honor the fruit with
festivals.
FLORIDA —Key lime pie be
came the state's official pie in July.
Popular since the late l8(X)s in
Key West, the pie is made with
small yellow key limes and sweet
ened condensed milk.
GEORGIA —Bobby Cleve
land of Locust Grove (pop. 2,322)
doesn’t let any grass grow under
his feet as an eight-time cham
pion of die STA-BIL National
Lawn Mower Racing Series. He
has reached speeds of 85 miles per
hcxir on a souped-up lawn mower.
KENTUCKY-Owen sboro
(pop. 54,067) is earning a rep
utation as "Broadway West,"
thanks to Zev Buffman, president
and CEO of River Park Center per
forming arts facility, who moved to
the area after a successful career as a
Broadway producer. His connections
have reeled in several debuts, includ
ing Mel Brooks The Producers.
KENTUCKY —Known as the first
millionaire west of the Alleghenies, John
Wesley Hunt made his fortune in the
mercantile business after the founding of
Lexington. His home. Hopemont (also
known as the Hunt-Morgan 1 louse),
built in 1814, is operated as a historic
house museum.

in 1734, Orange County

honor of William, prince of
Orange, who married Prin

same year.
Whecher Thomas Jefferson,
third president of the Unit
ed States, was at home in
Monticello near Charlottes
ville (pop. 45,049) or in the
nation's capital or abroad
in France, he recorded the
temperature and weather
conditions each morning
and afternoon in notebooks
made of small ivory cards.
Then once a week, he tran
scribed the data into a
leather-bound volume and
cleaned the ivory wafers
to be reused for the next
series of recordings. His
notebooks cover the period
from July 1, 1776, to just
months before his death on
July 1. 1826. Today, the
National Wfeather Service
honors outstanding service
by volunteer weather ob
servers by bestowing the
Thomas Jefferson award.
