Katie Farinelli looks to see if Warner Robins teammate Lauren Graham reached first on
her bunt during Saturday’s state softball sectionals. Both Farinelli and Graham scored
in the third inning of the 3-2 win that sent the Demonettes to the Elite Eight.

“The game ball went
to Kaitlyn Carriker,” said
Griffin. “That was the first
whole game she’s pitched all
season. That was awesome.
“Brianna did an awesome
job, too. We just felt we
couldn’t pitch her anymore.
Kaitlyn pitches in practice
some. She can pitch, but
doesn’t really like to. But I
told her we had to use her,
and she did the job.
“I told the girls we worked
the whole season for this.
Winning the region was
great, but we worked to get
to state, and we met that
goal.”

The Bears scratched sin

was coming off a 3-2 loss to
Warner Robins.

On Friduy, Warner Robins
and Union Grove, the Region
2-AAAAA champions, met for
a spot in the winners bracket
a double to left.
In the third, Bethany
Crenshaw bunted for a sin
gle, and Burkett followed
with her second hit in a row.
It was Thomas again with
the RBI as she hit a high
chopping single.
Burkett’s two-out dou
ble in the fifth followed a
Newnan error and led to the
third Bear run.
Carriker pitched out of
bases-loaded trouble in her
first inning with help from
a tag she made at home
on what was a wild pitch.
She only gave up three hits
and walked two through
five scoreless innings and
got more defensive help
when Thomas, at shortstop,
caught a line drive for a
double play.
Without getting a hit,
Newnan would load the
bases with one out in the
sixth. The Cougars ended
the shutout on a chopping
hit, then with. two outs
stole the lead 4-3 on a long
three-run single to left by
Wimberly Larkey. She was
caught stealing second for
the last out on a throw from
finals. While the Demonettes
coasted in the opening round
against Hiram, Union Grove
had to battle from behind to
beat the fourth-place team -
Burkett to Thomas.
Erica Vasquez’ leadoff
double in the top of the sev
enth led to the tying run as
Newnan booted a grounder
by April Collins.
Crenshaw, by the interna
tional tiebreaker rule, was
on second base to start the
top of the eighth. Burkett
served a 3-2 pitch to right
for a single.
Newnan fielded the next
ground ball and tried to
catch Crenshaw off third
base.
That didn’t work, and
Crenshaw would score the
winning run on a bad throw
back to the pitcher.
Carriker followed with
a solid shot to right for a
two-run triple and scored on
Taylor Fountain’s ground
out that Newnan conceded
to get the first out. Carriker
retired the side in order in
the home eighth.

Jenkins High - from Region
3-AAAAA.
Kristen Graham scattered
five hits and walked two in
seven innings for the win.
She struck out four. She
received a 3-0 lead to work
with in this game on a first
inning rally.
Lauren and Kristen got
on base with singles. Conlon
put down the bunt, but the
first baseman dropped the
ball to load them up.
Snipes put the ball in play
for an RBI, then Jensen
Barrett drew another error
from Union Grove on a
grounder to third. That
resulted in two runs and the
3-0 edge.
Union Grove threatened
in the second inning with
two hits and two runners in
scoring position. With two
outs, catcher Macy Brown
pounced on a ball hit just
fair in front of the plate. Her
throw to first just barely got
the third out.
The Demonettes would
leave the bases loaded in the
first and third frames, and
they couldn’t take advan
tage of Farinelli’s leadoff hit
in the fourth nor Barrett’s
two-out double in the fifth.

Conlon got the chance
to pitch first for Warner
Robins, and she only had to
work five innings against the
Hornets of Paulding County.
Her biggest problems came
in the first inning when she
gave up a hit, a walk and had
two errors occur behind her.
Hiram had the bases loaded
with one out, but Conlon got
a force out at home and a
strikeout to end it.
From there, Conlon retired
the side in the second, third
and fourth innings. Her
