WESTFIELD FOOTBALL
SPORTS
ELITE
From pafft iB
“This is more like play
ing with your friends and
being able to do good around
town.”
Conlon recalled the days
of going to the World Series
as having a lot of build up
and anticipation, and said
that same feeling is return
ing with this trip to the Elite
Eight. She said this Warner
Robins team has gelled
together with the same goals,
and the best feeling at the
south sectional was “relief”
in that they were able to
avoid any losers bracket ‘do
or-die’ games.
“(In Dublin), I think every
body was pretty relaxed,”
said Arnett. “I hope to go
into this weekend the same
way. Everything from here
on out is just another game. I
think they’re all excited, but
I hope our nerves are going
to be under control.”
“It’s exciting,” said senior
outfielder Sam Snipes.
“We’ve never gone this far.
We have a good team, so we
should go in there strong.
We bonded as a team, and we
have a lot of talent. If we hit,
we should do fine, because
our defense is strong.”
“It’s good competition,
but we have a really good
chance,” said Graham, who
wouldn’t approach a start
against Woodstock with any
sense of awe. “It’s going to
be like throwing against any
other team. We just have to
play together as a team.”
“I think it’s not going to be
any competition we haven’t
already seen,” said Conlon.
“Nothing that we can’t beat.
It’s going to be great to show
them we’re as good as they
are even though they are
up north and we are down
south.”
HOUSTON COUNTY
Houston County High’s
dream of a state softball
championship could become
a reality if the bat of catcher
Ashlee Burkett remains as
hot as it was at Southern
Pines in Dublin. Out of her
12 hits in five games, there
was a three-run home run,

a grand slam, two doubles
and the game-winning RBI
hit in the last do-or-die game
against Newnan High.
Burkett said she’s been
fighting tendonitis in her
elbow and let it rest for a
week leading up to the sec
tional.
“I hit way better than I
did (during the season),” she
said. “(The elbow) felt really
good last weekend.
“Our defense was real
ly good. I think Brianna
(Hancock) did a good job
pitching all those games.”
Burkett refers to the
freshman pitcher who was
forced into a lot of duty in
the south sectional with top
pitcher Chelsea Burroughs
herself nursing a sore arm.
It was Burkett’s job as the
catcher to make the pitch
calls to Hancock and Kaitlyn
Carriker, the winning pitcher
against Newnan with eight
innings of work.
“I really don’t pitch very
much,” said Carriker. “I play
third normally, and that’s
where I practice. All (our
pitchers) go to pitching les
sons every day.”
But Carriker got the call
from coach Cristi Griffin
that she was needed in the
circle with the season on the
line after Hancock threw 13
innings for two wins earlier
in the day.
“I knew I had to go out
there and try my best and
not let the team down,”
said Carriker. “We had good
defense, and that helped. We
threw a lot of curve balls and
change-ups to throw the bat
ters oil.”
The game went eight
innings tied 4-4. Houston
County, the visiting team,
scored four runs in the eighth.
Burkett’s single broke the
tie, but Carriker really made
it easy for herself by adding a
two-run triple.
Bethany Crenshaw, second
baseman, is the only senior
for the Bears. All weekend
she was sporting a bruise on
her chin as a result of taking
a ball to the face the previous
Monday.
But no marks can take
away her excitement at the
prospect of playing more
games against the state’s
HOUSTON DAILY JOURNAL
best.
“Our team really works
together well,” said
Crenshaw. “The young girls
play together, and the older
girls - there aren’t many of
us - work together well with
them. We about lost the last
one, but we worked through
it as a team. We struggled
a little bit, had a few bad
errors, but we picked each
other up and worked well as
a team.”
Griffin has led the Bears
to both the first fastpitch
region championship and
first Elite Eight appearance
in 2006. Now comes the task
of looking for ways to get past
Peachtree Ridge, the team
that beat No. 1 Woodstock
in a north sectional winners
bracket final.
Peachtree Ridge’s season
includes a 2-0 win against
Warner Robins. The Lions,
based in Suwanee, play in
the same region as another
strong 5A program at Collins
Hill.
“Woodstock and Collins
Hill have all beat them dur
ing the year,” said Griffin. “I
don’t know much about them
besides that all the competi
tion up there is good. All four
(north sectional) teams are
really good. We just have to
do the best we can to put the
ball in play and play good
defense.”
“I’m pumped,” said
Crenshaw. “I think we might
surprise a few people. I hope
we have something to show
them.”
“We have to keep our bats
going,” said Burkett. “Our
pitching needs to stay after
them.”
As for Burroughs’ avail
ability for Columbus, Griffin
said she went to therapy on
Monday and considered let
ting her throw on Tuesday.
She said, after the games in
Dublin, she has confidence in
both Hancock and Carriker
if she has to use one or both
again.
