Taylor wants to up
minimum wage
ATLANTA (AP) - Lt. Gov.
Mark Taylor sought to shore
up his Democratic base on
Tuesday, proposing a $1
increase in Georgia’s mini
mum wage.
Trailing in the race for
governor with less than two
weeks to go before the Nov.
7 general election, Taylor
turned to one of his party’s
greatest hits, likely to ener
gize core supporters.
Taylor noted that his
Republican opponent, Gov
Sonny Perdue, voted against
the last minimum wage hike
in Georgia five years ago.
The minimum wage was
boosted in 2001 from $3.25
to $5.15 an hour, bringing
it in line with the national
rate.
“ Georgia’s families not only
deserve this raise, they have
earned this raise,” Taylor
said in a news release.
“Working families haven’t
had a raise in five years.
That’s wrong, and I will
change it.”
Taylor’s proposal would
hike the minimum wage in
Georgia from $5.15 to $6.15
an hour.

Federal agents kill
Florida fugitive
LITHONIA (AP)-A fugi
tive from south Florida was
shot and killed by federal
agents in suburban Atlanta
early Wednesday when he
refused to put down what
they thought was a gun, but
turned out to be a shoe.
Agents from the
Southeastern Regional
Fugitive Task Force went to
an apartment complex near
Lithonia about 4 a.m. to
arrest 24-year-old Youwiers
Vilpie, said U.S. Marshal
Richard Mecum.
The agents were serving
a warrant from the Drug
Enforcement Administration
office in south Florida,
Mecum said. Vilpie was also
wanted for questioning in
two homicides in Ft. Myers,
Fla., Mecum said.
When the agents arrived at
the apartment, “they identi

get him out,” Mecum said.

Mary Perdue takes a leading
role in her husband's campaign
ATLANTA (AP) - The
race for governor in Georgia
has produced a surprise star:
Gov. Sonny Perdue’s wife,
Mary.
As the campaign has heat
ed up, the soft-spoken Mary
Perdue has taken on a more
visible role, even appearing
solo in her husband’s latest
television commercial.
“I probably know Sonny
Perdue better than anyone
on earth,” she says. “I know
his heart, his love for this
state and his desire to leave
things better than we found
them.”
With tough attack ads
from both candidates hitting
the airwaves, Mary Perdue
helps soften Perdue’s rough
edges. Political experts say
she conveys a message to
women voters in particular:
I trust him and you can too.
Women voters are expected
to play a critical role in the
general election just two
weeks away. Mary Perdue
has also been able to strike a
mildly disapproving, mother
ly tone when it comes to her
husband’s rival, Democratic
Lt. Gov. Mark Taylor.
In one television spot she
fusses that she won’t let
the family dog, Lucy, watch
television now that Taylor
has begun attacking Perdue.
Then she delivers the zinger:
“It’s such a shame.”
In another TV ad she
strikes a blow for sisterhood,
saying that she hopes Taylor
doesn’t do to her husband
“what he did to CaihyCoir.”
Taylor defeated Cox. fche seq
retary of state, in at hard

would have been the first
female gubernatorial nomi
nee from a major party in
Georgia.
While Perdue has been
facing questions about his
Florida land deal and has
gone on the attack against
Taylor, Mary Perdue has
helped him also play the fam
ily man. Sunny images of his
grandchildren, his wife and
the family dog have been Fix
tures in many of his ads.
Mary Perdue’s prominent
role on TV stands is in sharp
contrast to Taylor’s wife,
Sacha, who’s been absent
from her husband’s cam
paign spots so far. Experts
say the Taylor camp is likely
worried about highlighting
the age gap between Taylor
and his 30-year-old wife. She
is nineteen years his junior.
Still, the Taylor camp
said Sacha Taylor has been
hitting the campaign trail
hard for her husband, visit
ing 46 counties in the last
two weeks. This past week
end she stumped for him
in Sylvester and Lumpkin.
She recently marched in a
parade in Perdue’s home
turf of Houston County.
Mary Perdue, 56, has been
gradually getting used to
the spotlight, taking on a
higher profile as first lady.
The former speech thera
pist has made foster children
and child welfare key issues
at a steady stream appear
ances throughout the state.
The Perdues have served as
foster parents to eight new
, borns awaiting adoption.
