Bush boost
STATESBORO (AP) - Less
than two months after visit
ing Georgia to raise money
for Max Burns, President
Bush returned for an encore
appearance Monday with
the former Republican con
gressman whose comeback
race could be critical for the
GOP to keep control of the
House.
“Max knows what it takes
to be a United States con
gressman, because he’s
done it before,” Bush told
5,000 people attending a
rally at Georgia Southern
University. “And when you
turn out Nov. 7, he’s going
to do it again.”
Bush planned to return to
Georgia today to stump for
another former GOP con
gressman, Mac Collins, in
Perry.
The back-to-back cam
paign trips a week before the
Nov. 7 elections highlight
two Georgia congressional
races Republicans see among
their best shots at upsetting
incumbent Democrats.
Burns, 57, of Sylvania faces
a rematch with Democratic
Rep. John Barrow, who
defeated Burns in 2004
in eastern Georgia’s 12th
District. Collins hopes to
unseat Democratic Rep. Jim
Marshall in the Bth District.
“It’s going to be competi
tive until the end,” Burns
said of his race with Barrow.
“This is a two-point race. If
it’s a margin of three, four
or more, that’s a landslide.”
Surrounded by cotton
and soybean fields in rural
Bulloch County, the Georgia
Southern campus is an
ideal backdrop for Bush and
Burns to fire up faithful con
servatives.
Bush received 64 percent
of the vote in Bulloch County
in 2004, and Burns spent 20
years at the 16,800-student
university as a professor of
information systems.

Perdue, a Republican, let
loose after facing repeated
questions from Taylor about
his land transactions and a
tax cut law he signed that he
ultimately benefited from.
“I was hoping I wouldn’t
have to use this,” Perdue
said, responding to a ques
tion about how to combat
illegal drugs in Georgia
among children.
“It’s really about good
parenting. It’s about being
a good model for your chil
dren and not using drugs in
front of them,” Perdue said.
“Not driving when your
young infant son is in the
car. That’s what protecting
our kids from drugs is really
about, Lt. Gov. Taylor.”
