Wednesday
proclaimed
“Family
Literacy
Day”
Special to the Journal
Warner Robins Mayor
Donald Walker, according to
a release, has joined Gov.
Sonny Perdue in proclaiming
Wednesday, “Family Literacy
Day”.
“Low literacy skills can
render parents unable to
teach their own children
such daily tasks as how to
read a medicine bottle, read
a map, make correct change
or prepare school home
work,” Walker read from the
proclamation.
Calling attention to a
long-time, multi-faceted
city effort to increase learn
ing at all levels, Walker,
according to the release,
focused on the Houston
County Certified Literate
Community Program as a
successful example of work
ing to elevate literacy. CLCP
a consortium of concerned
individuals from all walks
of life, partners with the
city and Middle Georgia
Technical College in behalf
of adult literacy including
the GED program.
Board Chairwoman Kathy
Hart called the mission vital,
particularly, she said, consid
ering that four of 10 Georgia
first graders will not gradu
ate from high school.
Additionally, CLCP
Program Coordinator Skip
Holmes calls attention to
a recent GPTV interview
during which the Governor
revealed that those with a
diploma will outlive the 1.2
million adults in the state
without one by almost 10
years.
