Ayer captures
summer league
pitching lienors
By DON MO NCR IFF
Journal Sports Editor
Rally time. That may have
been Buddy Ayer’s charge
during the Perry Horseshoe
Pitcher’s Club’s Summer
League series.
The group had 12 scheduled
contests - each Monday - to
determine its second champion
of the season. The first - for the
spring - went to Dave McKim.
Ayer emerged as the sum
mer’s best following play Oct.
23 at Rozar Park. The week
prior he said Mary Ann Gibbs
“just edged me out” (in the
standings).
This time it was him, only
edging out not Gibbs but Larry
Myers.
Ayer, after finishing as close
as second “once,” he said, and
being as far back as 11th at one
point, finished with a record
of 24-12. Myers, who himself
at one point had been eighth,
ended up 23-13. Myers went
23-13. Gibbs was third at 21.5-
14.5. McKim, who never led
this time around, ended up
fifth at 21-7.
He was followed by Dane
Clark, who was 18.5-14.5,
Jerome Kennedy, who was 15-
15, Chuck Poole at 14-12 and
Wayne Lawton 13-14.
Eugene Davis and Richard
Thompson were both tied at
10th, the first with a record of
9-6, the second at 9-2.
Frank Jordan (8.5-6.5) was
12th, John Rackley 13th (7.5-
13.5) Doyle Johnson 14th
(6-0), Alma McKim 15th
(5.5-8.5), Jan Collier 16th (5-
4), Marge Jordan 17th (4.5-
10.5) Maureen Thompson and
Marlee Shock both 18th (4-4
and 4-2, respectively).
Willene Vandergrief (3-0),
Suzanne Miller (3-3), Bob
Fairchild (3-0), Thomas Carter
(3-9) and Ronnie Miller all fin
ished in a tie for 20th. Gordon
Vandergrief and Jessica
Etheridge were 25th (2-4 for
each), Marcus Waters (0.5-2.5)
was 27th and Joanne Kennedy
and Jimmy Etheridge (0-3 and
0-6, respectively) were each
tied for the last spot in 28th.
