The Democrats pre-emption strategy
Finally, Democrats have
a battle plan. This
month, they went
to war - on the American
electoral process. Their pre
emption strategy?
Call into question the
results of the midterms even
before Election Day had
begun.
Brigadier General Nancy
Pelosi of the Bth Drapery
Division led the charge
in an interview with her
hometown San Francisco
Chronicle last week:
Pelosi cautioned that the
number of Democratic House
victories could.be higher or
lower and said her greatest
concern is over the integ
rity of the count - from the
reliability of electronic vot
ing machines to her worries
that Republicans will try to
manipulate the outcome.
“That is the only variable in
this,” Pelosi said. “Will we
have an honest count?”
The “only variable”? How
about the variable of vot

Contemporary Russia still
suffers from the long-term
effects of Stalin’s evil dep
redations. Unlike Germany
and Japan, two other nations
once run by mass-murdering
cliques, Russia didn’t bene
fit from a postwar American
military occupation. Check
the empirical record: Those
history-breaking American
endeavors demonstrably
hasten a country’s rise from
the hell of sociopathic tyr
anny. This past Sunday,
former Iraqi tyrant Saddam
Hussein received a death
sentence for his role in the
murder of 148 people in the
Iraqi town of Dujail.
As these complex affairs
go, the ex-tyrant got a fair
trial. The overwhelming evi
dence of murder and may
hem made the outcome a
foregone conclusion, but
“foregone” doesn’t automat
ically mean unfair.
Dictators tout some of
their crimes. Saddam’s
Dujail murders were a pub
lic lesson similar to one the
Nazi murderers laid on the
Czechs at Lidice in 1942.
The dictator’s message:
Cross me, and I’ll kill you en
masse and indiscriminately.
Arguably, the trial was too
fair to Saddam, given his
thrashing antics and politi
cal theatrics. But antics and
theatrics (designed to play
to sensationalist media) and
murder of judges and law
yers (traditional dictator and
mob boss methods) were his
best ploys, considering the
evidence against him.
While serving in Iraq
in 2004, I asked several
Iraqis what they thought
of Saddam's then-impend
ing trial and its potential
outcome. My “anecdotally
polled” Iraqis all knew about

Two days before the elec
tion, left-wing Boston Globe
columnist Robert Kuttner
also advanced the Democrat
strategy of pre-emptive
delegitimization - which
Boston radio talker Michael
Graham rightly character
ized as “Either We Win Or
You Cheated.”
Wrote Kuttner: “|Ulnless
there are levels of theft and
fraud that would truly mean
the end of American democ
racy, a Democratic House
seems as close to a sure thing
as we ever get in American
politics three days before
an election. . . . November
2006 will be remembered
either as the time American
democracy was stolen again,
maybe forever, or began a
brighter day.”
Meanwhile, a gaggle of
left-wing lawyers and col
lege students mobilized at
the polls to “protect” the
integrity of the voting pro
Dujail (as well as other big
time crimes), and they all
agreed that Saddam would
be convicted and killed. One
fellow added: “We Iraqis
should try him and not the
U.N. The U.N. would never
reach a conviction. Besides,
he committed his crimes
against us.” By “U.N.,” I
believe the man meant the
international court in the
Hague. Saddam rejected
Sunday’s verdict with his
usual
bluster,
arrogance
and anti-
American
tripe. Still,

Iraq’s Prime Minister
Nouri al-Maliki said: “The
verdict placed on the heads
of the former regime does
not represent a verdict for
any one person. It is a ver
dict on a whole dark era that
was unmatched in Iraq’s his
tory.”
“Unmatched in Iraq’s
history” can be extended a
bit to read, “unmatched in
Mesopotamian history.”
A history-breaking, tyr
anny-shattering event - but
few in the sensationalist
media have noticed it. Since
the verdict, we’ve already
heard a few talking heads
sob about “Saddam as vic
tim” and the court exact
ing “victors’ vengeance.”
Though Iraqis ran the trial,
the “Western judicial impe
rialism” charge is circulat
ing among the usual media
and academia suspects.
I know, The New York
Times and John Kerry have
told us Iraq is a disaster. Not
true. There’s a democrati
cally elected government in
the potentially most pow-
cess.

Never mind the glaring

a phony vehicle to sow seeds
