Westfield holds homecoming and alumni weekend
Special to the Journal
The Westfield Schools
recently held is Homecoming
and Alumni Weekend festivi
ties. During that time, school
officials handed out three
major awards: The Heritage
Award, Headmaster’s
Award and the Westfield-
Beechwood-Baker Alumni
Award.
In regard to the Heritage
Award, each year the
Westfield Board of Trust,
according to a release from
the Westfield Schools, rec
ognizes an individual who
made a “significant contri
bution of leadership, time
and resources during the
School’s early years.
“Without the commitment
of a special group of individ
uals who worked diligently
to make concrete the vision
of the school in the early
seventies and eighties, the
school would not be poised
today to serve our commu
nity as one of the best inde
pendent schools in central
Georgia,” the release reads.
This year, the award was
presented to two individu
als who, according to the
release, “truly represent the
spirit of this Award.
“During the early years of
Westfield, no two individu
als were more significant
to the establishment of The
Westfield Schools than Mr.
Ed Beckham and Mr. Billy
Beckham. Through their
efforts, Westfield acquired
over half of its current cam
pus through Ed and Billy’s
philanthropy. As long-time
property owners in the Perry
area, Ed and Billy helped
Westfield acquire much of
our campus property and
establish the current campus
that now comprises approxi
mately 28 acres.”
Ed and Billy, it was said,
continue to be “generous”
to the school through the
years, participating in vari
ous capital and annual cam
paigns that have resulted in
enhanced campus facilities.
In addition, Ed served
as a member of the Board
of Trustees for five years,
beginning in 1971. Both he
and Billy were “instrumen
tal in shaping the school’s
philosophy and policies in
these early years.”
The duo are also members
of area churches and contin
ue to support the school and
community through mem
bership in various boards
and civic organizations.
“Their vision for Westfield
has left a legacy for, not only
their children and grandchil
dren, but also future genera
tions,” reads the release.
Combined, the two’s fami
lies include eight Westfield
alumni: Beth Beckham
Henderson, Ed Beckham,
111, Bob and Kollyn Lawson,
Valerie Beckham Moore,
Gene Beckham, Brad
Beckham and Summer
McWilliams and a current
Westfield student, grandson,
Beck Beckham.
The Headmaster’s Award,
according to the release, is
given each year to an indi
vidual who has made a sig
nificant contribution to the
school in recent years.
This year it went to Le
Ann Tuggle, who the release

Penny Byrd, chairman of the Westfield Board of Trustees, center, presents the Heritage
Award to Edward M. Beckham, 11, left, and William E. Beckham, Jr.
reads, “has shown her
love and support for The
Westfield Schools in many
ways.”
For example, over the past
two years, she has worked
“diligently” to establish
what has reportedly become
one of the most eagerly
anticipated fund-raising
events at Westfield. As co
chairperson of the Westfield
auction, she helped lead a
group of volunteers whose
efforts resulted in raising
$125,000 for Westfield.
The auction funded
the brick fence which has
“enhanced our campus’ curb
appeal.” Tuggle was active
in the design and construc
tion of the project.
As an author and a for
mer media specialist, Tuggle
also supports the school’s
Accelerated Reader program,
which was implemented this
year for their third graders.
And, she served for
three years on the
Westfield*Beechwood*
Baker Alumni Association
where she served as secre
tary, and she also serves as a
ninth grade room mother.
If that wasn’t enough,
she also finds time, the
release states, to give to her
church and community. She
is a seventh grade Sunday
School teacher at Perry
United Methodist Church
and serves on the Youth
Council and Staff Parrish
Relations Committee. She is
past Chairman of the Perry
Beautification Commission
and currently serves on the
Beautification Committee.
She was appointed by Gov.
Sonny Perdue to serve as a
member of the State Nurses
Licensing Board.
Tuggle also attended
Beechwood School and
is a graduate of Georgia
Pumpkin time
College. She and husband
Rob have two children, Tom,
a Westfield sixth grader,
and Kaki, a freshman at
Westfield.
The third and final award,
presented each year by
the Westfield-Beechwood-
Baker Alumni Association,
was given, according to the
release, to an alumna who
has made a distinguished
contribution to the school
and the respective commu
nities.
The award was won by
Dawn Daniel Jerles. A 1981
graduate of Westfield, Jerles,
according to the release, was
an “excellent” athlete and
was active in many clubs
and organizations.
Today, Jerles has taught
French in the Houston
County School system and
at Westfield over the past 15
years.
As a current Westfield
faculty member, she teach
es French I, French II
and French 111. She has
also helped chaperone and
organize Westfield’s Study
Abroad Program.
“Dawn is known as some
one who will not only orga
nize a project, but also work
to see that the project is
completed with quality,”
the release states. She also
organized and co-chaired
Westfield’s “highly suc
cessful” Spring Auction for
the past two years, and she
served as a room mother
and also served for three
years on the Westfield
*Beechwood*Baker Alumni
Council from 2004 through
2006 where she worked
“tirelessly.”
“She could be counted
on each year to help with
Alumni basketball games
and every other alumni proj
ect in whatever capacity was
LOCAL
needed,” reads the release.
In addition, Jerles is very
involved in the community.
She is a member of the Perry
United Methodist Church
where she has taught
Sunday School and serves
on the administrative board.
She has served as the chair
man of the Perry Chamber of
Commerce Annual Meeting
Committee over the last four
years.
She and her husband,
Billy, also a Westfield alum
nus, have two sons: Hudson,
a Westfield eighth grader
and Row, a Sophomore at
Westfield.
