ALABAMA —Accord ing co local lore in Colbert
Gxincy (pop. 54,984), ferry operator George Colbert once
charged Gen. Andrew Jackson $ 7 5,()()0 to transport his
tnxjps across the Tennessee River in the early 18(X)s.
ARKANSAS —-The world record brown trout —a
whopping 40 pounds, 4 ounces—was hooked in 1992 by
Howard “Rip" Collins in the Little Red River near his
home in Heber Springs (pop. 6,432).
FLO RI DA —-Thousands of ponytails have been do
nated co Locks of Love, headquartered in Like Worth
(pop. 35,13.3), so the hair can be made into wigs and hair
pieces for disadvantaged children suffering from hair loss.
GEORGIA —The two-storv log house of John Ross,
first chief of the Cherokee Nation, is preserved in Ross
ville (pop. 3,511). Ross developed the Cherokee constitu
tion. modeled after diat of the United States, and served
as chief from 1828 until his death in 1866. His log house
was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in
1973.
KENTUCKY —Billed as Americas largest
indoor farm show, the National Farm Machinery
Show in Louisville features 800 exhibitors. About

LOUISIANA —Bunkie (pop. 4,662) was
named by Capt. Samuel Haas, who donated land
in 1882 tor a railroad right-of-way. Haas had given
his daughter a toy monkey, which she mispro
nounced as “bunkie," giving him the idea for the
town's name.
MISSISSIPPI— In 1979, the Rev. H.D. Den
nis of Vicksburg (pop. 26,-fO?) vowed to Margaret
Rogers that if she married him, he'd transform her
humble store. Margaret's Grocery Store, into a pal
ace. He built castle-like pillars and archways with
painted cinder blocks and added folk art displays
inside and out.
NORTH CAROLINA— Begun in 1988
as a tribute to musician Eddy Merle Watson (1949-
85), Merle Fest in Wi Ikesboro (pop. 3.159) has blos
somed into one of che nation's largest “Americana
music” events, attracting 80,000 visitors and top
entertainers each April. Merle was the son of musi
cian Doc Watson.

SOUTH CAROLINA —Founded in the
19205, Young Pecan Co. in Florence (pop. 30,248)
is the nation's largest pecan sheller, supplying nuts
to major ftxid manufacturers. The company's retail
stores are tasty places offering roasted, spiced and
chocolate-covered pecans.
TENNESSEE —-The 1896 Victorian manor Fal
con Rest in McMinnville (pop. 12249) is nicknamed
“che Tennessee Biltmore” and is open for tours. The
home was built by mill owner Clay Faulkner, who
manufactured Gorilla Pants, so named because they
were so strong that a gorilla couldn't tear chem apart.
V IRGINIA —-Ticonderoga Farms in Chantilly
(pop. 41,041) is billed as the state's largest cut
vour-own Christmas tree farm. The fourth-genera
tion farm also grows giant firs and pine for hotels,
churches and other lofty settings.
WEST VIRGINIA —Garrett Kysar. I*. of
Charles Town (pop. 2.907) coasted to first place
in the masters division of the 69th annual All-
American Soap Box Derby in July in Akron, Ohio.
The race is nicknamed the "Gravity Grand Prix"
because the homebuilt cars lack engines.^
