Flint Energies Foundation announces three more grants
Special to the Journal
The Flint Energies
Foundation announced
recently it had made three
more grants in addition to a
handful made earlier.
One, in the amount of
$2,500 went to Houston
County High School FFA.
This grant, according to a
release from Flint Energies,
will be used to purchase
embryos, medicine and labo
ratory equipment for the new
Veterinary Technology class.
Houston County High School
introduced a Veterinary
Technology class this year.
Four local veterinarians
have volunteered to assist
with state of the art prac
tices.
There are currently 17
“vet tech” students in the
program. Nearly 120 stu
dents participate in FFA.
A second grant, also for
$2,500, was awarded to
Rebuilding Together with
Christmas in April.
This grant, according to
the release, will be used to
purchase building supplies to
restore a home gutted by fire.
Rebuilding Together has
approximately 600 volun
teers who assist with repairs
to homes of the elderly and
disabled.
In 2005 repairs were made

The third grant, also
$2,500, went to Special
Olympics.
The grant, according to
the release, was used to co
sponsor the 2006 Special
Olympics Georgia State

Perry at the AgriCenter.
Funds were used for facil

In 2001, Flint Energies
adopted this progam,
Operation Round Up®, to
enable members to raise
money for local charities and
service organizations.
The electric cooperative’s
members contribute nearly
$300,000 annually to the
Flint Energies Foundation,
which supports worthy
causes in the 16 counties it
serves.
Operation Roundup® is
a way for members to add
voluntarily to those funds
in their own unique way.
Participating members allow
Flint Energies to “round
up” their bill to the nearest
dollar.
For example, if a bill is
$92.71, a member will pay
$93, with all 29 cents going
directly to the Flint Energies
Foundation.
On average, a member will
contribute $6 a year, but
never more than $ll.BB.
If a member decides not
to participate or chooses to
discontinue contributions at
any time, they may simply
contact Flint Energies.
Nearly 80% of Flint’s
members have chosen to
participate. Donations to
Operation Round Up are
tax deductible and members
receive a summary of con
tributions in future January
and February bills.
The Flint Energies
Foundation Board of
Directors disburses all con
tributions to approved, wor
thy projects.
Member contributions are
not used for administration
costs.
The Foundation is a
state-chartered, non
profit, 501(c) foundation.
Foundation Board members
include Chairman Carol
Glasgow, Warner Robins;
Vice Chairman Fred Jarrell,
Reynolds; Secretary Joanne
Hamlin, Lizella; Treasurer
Jane Hobbs, Oglethorpe;
Mike Huckabee, Fort
Valley; Charmaine Palmer,
Kathleen; Dozier Blackstock,
Henderson; Connie
McCutcheon, Midland; Pat

Lashonda Watts, Perry
High School Valedictorian
of 2000, is the first Duke
University medical student
to enroll in the MD/master
of science in information sci

offered collaboratively by
Duke and the University of

It was the option of doing
something different from her
medical school classmates,
Watts said, that led her to
the new program.
“Most people enter Duke
with plans to do lab research,
clinical research or get a
Masters in Public health,”
she said.” However, I found
George West, Kathleen; and
Ronnie Morgan, Buena Vista.
